I am seldom dumbfounded when it comes to wine. So, I appreciate it when that happens.
This 1990 La Grande Dame was amazing and so fresh. Full disclosure, I am not normally impressed by this producer and this cuvée. Unusual for a champagne of 35 yrs to be so fresh in my experience from inception. So much so, if poured blind many would call it N/V or a fairly recent vintage. The color was even palish straw. Mags were brought from their Champagne House.
Excellent with the dessert of the evening, “Lemon Meringue Pie Cookie.”
Enjoyed at the 2026 “From Cellar Event” Pebble Beach Food and Wine.

La Mouline Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2005
Opened prior to dinner and enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The wine pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and desiccated black and red fruits: mixed brambles, Flintstone vitamins, spiced meat, olives, purple flowers, black pepper, dried herbs, rocky earth, a mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Similar to the 1997 we tasted alongside, with all of the same notes except this brought back the familiar Flintstone vitamins that I have encountered in La Mouline from the past. The structure was also more substantial. I preferred this to the 1997 tonight…but I’m splitting hairs! — 6 months ago

Grands Échézeaux Pinot Noir 1990
Right after opening: black fruit, powdery perfume, and rose petals wrapped around me in three-dimensional layers. 1990 really is a great vintage—every great vineyard site and every famous estate lives up to expectations.
One hour later: sandalwood, cream, aged Pu’er tea, and temple incense—the tertiary aromas had fully opened, and I felt as if I’d been carried back in a dream to the White Horse Temple.
On the acidity: vivid yet understated, with a firm yet balanced structure. Drinking such good wine lifts my mood too. — a month ago

Bought at auction. First bottle awful. This one is lovely. Needed two hours of air to settle and integrate. Freeze dried strawberries, dried cherries, plum, dust, herbs like tarragon and thyme on nose. I could smell for hours. Palate is bigger than I expected more game and herbs than fruit. Leather with dried cherries. There’s more herbs and plums and cooked/reduced berries but not super sweet. Good tannin still. Pretty good and fun to try at 26 years. Upon opening, this seemed a bit disjointed, with muted fruit flavors and strong herbal notes. Decanting didn’t seem to help much, but day 2 it finally opened up nicely, with nice complexity and intensity on the palate. Cherry, raspberry, cassis, bay leaf, dried Italian herbs, anise, cloves, vanilla, cedar, earth, and balsamic notes all come through. Really tasty, but maybe a bit too intense. I can see this improving with a few more years of aging so the flavors coalesce and soften a bit more. — 3 months ago
