Les Preuses Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2018

Jan A
9.5

So I started my wine collecting thing (obsession) around 8-9 years ago. This was among the first wines I bought and they have been sitting in my cellar since. I opened a bottle of this a couple of years ago and today the second one. The first bottle was obviously good quality then, but the wine was still too young: nervous and steely (chablis!). I find it beautiful to see that the first bottles are now coming around in their drinking window.

So this has fleshed out considerably and just entering it's drinking window. A rich creamy texture surrounded by lime, yellow flowers and oyster shell. Enough acidity to support the whole thing. Balanced.

Les Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2012

Another beauty that is fresh, intense with its steely, mineral, saline, lemon & orchid fruits. — 2 months ago

Texas High Plains Mourvèdre 2019

Medium ruby in color; raspberries, black cherries, and cedar on the nose; medium acidity; medium plus tannins; tastes like blackberries, red plums, tabacco, and black olives with a long finish. — 5 months ago

Hunter Texas High Plains Red Blend 2019

Lots of cherry and current on the nose. Smooth, slightly earthy in the mouth. Very smooth in the finish too. Nice Texas find! — 2 months ago

Bougros Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay 2021

Damn this was so mineraly, flinty, and savory to me! Like licking a rock. Very impressive but also a little brash at this point, would probably be incredible with some more time — 3 months ago

This one, on the other hand, did smack me in the face with a surprising streak of lean almost metallic minerals cutting through. — 2 months ago

Muted nose. Honey, apricot, and butter. Buttery, fully coating the palate. Heavy finish. — 2 months ago

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 2017

I read an article recently where the author felt that this 1er cru probably deserved to be a Grand Cru. Whilst this was very good I think it is right at Premier Cru. Initial notes were salinity amongst the apple, citrus flavours and a touch of beeswax. The following night tasted more “new World “. This was very enjoyable but needs to develop more complexity. I will leave my remaining bottle for a couple of years. — 5 months ago

"Thunder Mountain" tastes like Grand Cru in the right hands. The priciest of the 1er Crus but more affordable than Grand Cru stuff, it occupies the sweet spot as it relates to QPR.

@Bob McDonald , I can state that the Raveneau MdT Chablis I’ve had from the 1980s were certainly of Grand Cru quality!
