Copper Corkscrew

R. López de Heredia

Viña Tondonia Rioja Rosé Blend 2011

Medium copper salmon colour , with wide slightly yellow tinged rim . Toasty notes , with some dried herbs , orange rind , candle wax , toasted almonds , sea breeze, in some ways quite similar to the white reserva. On the palate this is quite intense and grippy again , with a nutty , spiced orange rind , dried red fruit . Good balanced acidity , good volume and decent length . This is ready and drinking well now but will probably last well over the next 5 -8 years, though I don’t see it improving — 12 days ago

Biokult

Naken Organic Pinot Gris Muskateller

Gorgeous light copper color. Honey and melon on the nose. Initially a bubbly, dry white. Settles into a smooth minerality with a soft sourness that subtly becomes lightly fruited as it's in contact w the air. Incredible! — 3 years ago

Podere Pradarolo

Vej Bianco Antico Malvasia di Candia 2019

Bianco Antico sees a ridiculous 180 days on the skins of Malvasia di Candia Aromatica (different from plain Malvasia). It’s a grippy fully hopped juicy East Coast IPA. Copper tone. Bitter citrus and green tea and grapefruit.

Must love orange wine. Must love bitter dry.

Ruinart

Dom Ruinart Brut Rosé Champagne Blend 2004

2004 vintage. Last tasted 03.01.25 (9.6). Another decade beckons. Beautiful acidity and balance. Light-medium body. Exquisite color. Slightly metallic/copper flavor with decaying rose petals. At the top of the bell curve currently. Phenomenal. 04.04.25. — 3 months ago

Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Rosé Blend 2018

This was presented double-blind to the Tasting Group. The wine is copper in color with a pinkish hue, possibly due to skin contact. No signs of gas or sediment. No staining of the tears. On the nose, some slight VA, underripe stone fruit, grassy notes, slight petrol notes, olive brine, white pepper and very slightly smoky. On the palate, fruit is more pronounced; bright and tightly coiled. The stone fruits are confirmed…adding quince to the fruit set. The wine is quite floral too and there is a slightly toasted marshmallow thing. The wine is dry. Not tannic. Acid is medium+. Wonderful texture. Guesses were all over the place but when I said that it was not testable, one taster called Chateau Simone Palette Rosé which, is a really great call. Anyway, Musar Rosé ended up being too far a stretch for even this group of seasoned wine geeks. This was my first experience with the 2018 Musar Rosé and I would recommend to hold for a few years an allow to uncoil and flesh out. — 3 years ago

Bollinger

La Grande Année Brut Chardonnay - Pinot Noir Rosé Blend 2012

This superstar 2012 vintage just doesn’t seem to miss. Especially not when paired with the elegance of Bollinger.

A gorgeous rose copper color in the glass. Plenty of fine bubbles that seem to just go on and on. The approachability of these outstanding 12’s is immediate. Wild strawberries and herbs shine on the nose. Red currant, raspberries, and stewed plums. Some exquisite spice notes along with white flowers. Tangerines and watermelons play a part.

The vitality and sheer energy of this is amazing. 67% Pinot Noir from Aÿ and Verzenay. 33% Chardonnay from Oiry and Le Mesnil sur Oger with 5% still red wine from Bollinger’s legendary Côte aux Enfants vineyard. Terrific youthful tension and balance. Zippy acidity with 8 g/l of sugar. Disgorged in August of 2019 and already showing some maturity.

Pure romance on the tongue. Silky smooth and elegant with fresh red berries and more spice on the palate. Saffron and honey with oak complimenting. The Lehmann Jamesse Grand Blanc provided more floral notes, while the Riedel Dom Perignon showed more ripe fruit and minerality. Both wonderful. Yes this will obviously develop over time and become so much more special but you deserve this now. So do I. Enjoy.

Skin contact Slovenian Pinot Grigio. Beautiful light copper/peach color. Aromas and flavors of ripe pear, melon and nectarines. Additional notes of minerals and yeast. Nice creamy texture. Dom Pérignon

Brut Rosé Champagne 2005

The colour of pink copper. Consistent fine bead with aromas of strawberry, honey dew melon, hint of beeswax. 100% Pinot Noir. As Jancis commented “like a Volnay in its perfume and delicacy but as substantial as fine red burgundy “. Could not see the point in further cellaring given how good this is now and already 17 years old, even if the window by JR is to 2027. A combination celebration of wedding anniversary and farewell to the children returning overseas. It’s all happening!! PS The photo shows the back light on turned on with a switch in the punt of the bottle giving a sexy pink glow. Obviously aimed at the dimly lit night club scene where it would definitely enhance sales. — 3 years ago

Jesera Collio Pinot Grigio 2019

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2019 Pinot Grigio Jesera has a pretty pink color with copper hues strewn throughout. It’s wonderfully fresh and lifted, showing white strawberry, apple, a dusting of confectioners’ sugar and hints of candied ginger. Silky textures flesh out across the senses, weightier than expected yet perfectly balanced by brisk acids, taking on a more savory persona, as notes of peach and melon give way to zesty exotic spices. There’s an almost-Asian peppery note here coupled with the wine’s inner florals that excites the senses. The Jesera really makes the case for skin-contact Pinot Grigio and will appeal to a broad range of palates. (Eric Guido, Vinous, January 2021)
