Legacy In A Glass

Château Margaux

Premier Grand Cru Classé Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2001

The sleeper vintage, one at this time I bet to be even more showy than the illustrious 2000. It’s simply just ready to go after a short decant wafting from the glass with layers of cassis, black truffle, violets and licorice. This is a wine of texture and elegance, as Margaux should be—It’s liquid cashmere in the mouth with melting tannins and a black truffle and mineral inflicted finale that keeps on going. Superb showing tonight, with still a long life ahead. — 4 months ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend 2009

Special bottle. Really in its sweet spot. Fragrant nose , with some Mourvèdre funk. Sweet tannins with dark red fruits. Some Tobacco and black olive. Matured further in glass over the hour and a half the bottle was consumed. Just left you want g more — 2 years ago

Cascina Francia Barolo Nebbiolo 2005

I wanted to sit on this since I opened a bottle just a few weeks ago. However, sensing that my wife needed a quality glass of wine tonight I decided to go with an obvious winner. It did not disappoint. Ton of earth with cherry and tar and thickness - this is as complex and lovely as ever. Lingering finish that is not quite puckery but lays heavy on the tongue for awhile. The bouquet is balanced. Right mix of power and perfume. The 2005 is still quite red in color and has plenty of vibrancy. It’s matured to fully drink but it’s still packing some oomph. Looks great in the glass. This was universally enjoyed over three hours and a thumbs up from the Mrs. — 3 years ago

Caymus Vineyards

Special Selection Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Caymus Vineyards – Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Napa Valley, California – USA 🇺🇸

Overview
Special Selection is Caymus’ flagship bottling, the only wine to twice earn Wine Spectator’s “Wine of the Year.” The 2013 vintage comes from a benchmark Napa year—warm, consistent, and producing deeply concentrated fruit. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from prime valley-floor sites, this wine showcases the Caymus hallmark: bold, plush, and fruit-driven Napa opulence.

Aromas & Flavors
Opulent blackberries, cassis, and baked blueberries, wrapped in layers of cocoa, espresso, and toasted vanilla. Secondary notes of licorice, sweet tobacco, and graphite add depth. With time in the glass, hints of cedar and leather start to show, signaling the early stages of graceful evolution.

Mouthfeel
Full-bodied and richly textured, almost velvet-like, with powerful yet polished tannins. The 2013 vintage delivers intensity and weight, but with balance—long, lingering finish loaded with ripe dark fruit and spice.

Winemaking Notes
Meticulous cluster selection, long maceration for depth, and extended aging in new French oak barrels (18+ months). Chuck Wagner’s hallmark style: unapologetically ripe fruit, creamy oak integration, and a seamless, approachable structure even in youth.

Food Pairing
A natural match for grilled ribeye, braised short ribs, or herb-crusted lamb. For a more indulgent pairing, try it with aged Gouda or truffle-infused dishes.

Verdict
A monumental vintage of Caymus Special Selection—ripe, hedonistic, and still showing youthful vigor more than a decade later. Built for aging, yet already a crowd-pleaser. A benchmark expression of Napa Cabernet’s luxurious side.

Personal Pick Highlight
2013 stands out as one of Napa’s greatest modern vintages, and tasting it now is like catching Caymus in its prime sweet spot: power meeting polish. Cheers!

A baby but a nice baby, this one needs a firm shake in the decanter and some time in the glass, but it delivers! — 2 years ago

Monprivato di Castiglione Falletto Barolo Nebbiolo 2010

Really a lovely Barolo. Last had 2 years ago. Opened 4 hours in advance, no decant. Don’t think it needed it either - this is quite seamless. Lighter color in the glass, but with a clarity that is obvious. Aromatically a lot of lighter red fruit and some earth. Palate has real depth with good acid and medium tannins with a very long finish. Quite delicious and a perfect pairing with some grilled campo grande pork marinated with garlic and rosemary. — 4 months ago

Château Léoville-Las Cases

Grand Vin de Leoville du Marquis de las Cases Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1990

Delectable Wine
9.5

Tasting the 1990 Léoville Las Cases just a few days after the 1989, it is clear which is the best vintage…this one. It has a sublime nose of melted black fruit, tar, cedar and bay leaf that shrugs off the heat of that summer better than most others. At 33 years of age, you could just lose yourself in these aromatics. The palate is clearly holding up well: beautifully defined and supple yet with typical Las-Cases backbone and depth. It builds magnificently in the glass toward a harmonious finish that reminds me of the 1985 in terms of its fleshiness. Wonderful. Tasted at the Lia's Wings/book dinner at Medlar restaurant. Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2004

Just wow! Blown away by this one. New private wine bar in Dallas had this on the list! Surprised to see this wine. The wine took some time to open up in the glass. I would have decanted this wine for hours if served at home, but not an option last night. Plenty of smiles as this evolved in the glass. Expressive nose, no tannins, nice acidity. Beautiful expressions of dark fruit peeking through, but not enough time to really shine. Still a fabulous bottle that I’m grateful I was able to enjoy with friends. — 3 years ago

I recommend a decant for at least a couple of hours (or more after testing). For some reason this wine takes time to express itself. Good luck!!
