Annual birthday WWC hosting. As normal, 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert, all presented blind.

Fun to open birth year wines around your birthday, especially when you can do a Bordeaux and Napa side by side. While not a great vintage, this held up well after a few hours and presented as expected. Clean and zero Brett. Great color! Deep ruby with hardly any bricking. Leather, cassis, vanilla pipe tobacco on the nose. Sporting a good bit of dusty red and black fruits (mostly tart raspberries and blackberries), there was a little savory truffle note mixed with an herbal and mocha finish. Still quite grippy. Quite deep ruby with wide terracotta , garnet rim . Quite deep slightly funky , red focused sous bois . Tobacco , slightly herbal notes . Quite concentrated but slightly flat red fruited sous bois , tobacco tinged , mineral , grafite finish. Not the best bottle of this , a bit funky and lacks a little exuberance and clarity on the nose and palate. Drink now and over the next few years on this showing. 2005 vintage. Beautiful nose, with cassis, blackberries, cedar wood, a little smokiness,and flowers. Seriously concentrated, combining power and elegance. Layers of fruit in a tight but ripe tannic structure. Showing beautifully now, but it should age effortlessly for decades. Classic Saint-Julien. — 3 months ago

Wonderful Bordeaux blend from Saint-Julien. Super dry dark blue fruit seamlessly integrated with aged wood notes of dark chocolate, raw tobacco and leather (remember chewing on this as a kid 😁) and smooth rounded tannins. Very open and inviting Chablis. Nose jumps out, with scents of crushed sea shell, citrus oil, green apple, wet straw. Round and ripe ( but not too ripe) in the mouth. Nice, gently but mouthwatering acids to buoy up the super-pure fruit. Some nice limestone minerality as well. Drinking beautifully right now. I don’t see this as a Chablis to age. — 2 months ago
