Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Syrah 1994

At this point, with this group, a Legends dinner simply wouldn’t be appropriate without at least one bottle of Chave Hermitage.

Opened about 90min prior to service; enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The 1994 Hermitage pours a slightly hazy garnet with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is vinous with perfumed notes of dried brambles, dried blueberry, dried purple flowers, black olive, mushroom, espresso, leather, stony earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and slightly sanguine. Delicious with the 5 Spice Cured Duck prepared with marinated Bing cherries, crispy shallot and Olathe corn polenta. It was such a pleasure to taste the ‘94 Chave next to the ‘85 Gentaz. Two Northern Rhône Legends working with their respective terroirs. Where the Gentaz was all about the aromatics of Côte Rôtie, the Chave was brought more of the power from the Hill of Hermitage. Drink now through 2056.

L'Hermitage Syrah 2022

2022, figgy, plum with undertones of bacon at first open. very elegant and soft on palate. beautiful. about 4 hrs later- decanted. change? more mineral, tannins are showing more now than at opening. dried fig, meaty. bolder fruit on back end of palate thru the finish. iron on finish. drinking great but more time would certainly be better. — 3 months ago

My contributions for a fun right bank Bordeaux dinner. This ended up being a standout amongst the group but others included ‘95 Cheval Blanc, ‘05 L’Evangile and ‘89 Figeac (the starter whites may have stole the show…mag of ‘10 Chave Hermitage Blanc, ‘08 Dom, ‘21 Magi’s CdP Blanc…this ‘04 ZH I brought was an excellent bridge to dessert…good r/s but not cloying; incredible vineyard).

I’ve only had TR once before but it was infanticide many years ago. At roughly 20yrs, I was excited to catch this on what I expected to be near peak. Very tight upon opening but after 45mins in the bottle, this really strut its stuff. Red and purple floral aromatics, bay leaf, and leather. Beautifully elegant on the palate but everything is in its place…supremely balanced. Clean (no brett), multi-layered fruit spectrum (red, purple, blackberries), sweet tobacco, espresso, little cassis. No roasted or over ripe profile, and also not a lean/green machine. Balance balance balance. Lovely. Wish I had another.

Like the great Penfolds wines, I feel like these need a long time to really show their capability.

Aléofane

St. Joseph Syrah 2012

Very composed and subtle Syrah from Northern Rhone with some age on it. Burnt red on the eye. Lots of black cherry on the nose, some blood and only a hint of white pepper. The mouthfeel is elegant; full bodied, medium alcohol with powerful black fruit but equally powerful with earth, iron, soft tannings, and a decadent finish. Amazing find. Vigneron: Natasha Chave. If you don’t know who she is, you probably should. — 5 years ago

J.L. Chave Sélection Farconnet Hermitage Syrah 2022

2022. Full bodied to cut the richness of a beautiful piece of Colorado lamb saddle, but it did not fight with the spiciness of the Merguez sausage stuffed squash blossom, shishitos, or the harissa negra sauce. At the Boiler Room. — 5 days ago

@Brian Hearty, I haven’t purchased Chave in years — is this a Cuvee from purchased fruit?
Brian Hearty

Brian Hearty

This was the first time I’ve had this wine and didn’t know it was included in the dinner until getting there. The fruit for J.L. Chave Sélection Hermitage "Farconnet" is sourced from purchased grapes grown in three distinct parcels on the historic Hermitage hill: Diognières (alluvial pebbles and spice), Péleat (sand and limestone for finesse), and Greffieux (glacial river stones for structure).

2024 enjoyed 5/2026. tasted in lineup of Rhône Blanc, mostly rich and oily. this would have shown better if we started with this. I really like, I prefer the more mineral style -which is this. subtle white flowers, honeydew, under ripe peach. lemon curd showing after opening. — 3 months ago

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2023

Opened three days earlier. The 2023 pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of ripe brambles, lavender pastilles, bacon fat, black pepper, and fine baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. A delightful pairing with Bison ribeye. Young but showing its potential. Drink now through 2043. — 14 days ago

Le Secret des Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend 2015

Somewhat analogous with my 2013 Chave Blanc impression, this was more about peering into the bright future in store for this wine. The potential is simply buried deep beneath the surface. All the stuffing is there for a special wine down the road. While enjoyable now, patience will be handsomely rewarded. Personally, I wouldn’t touch well-cellared examples until much closer to 2030. — 4 years ago
