Black Saint Peter

Château Léoville Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2005

Considered by some to be the Wine of the Vintage, the 2005 Léoville-Barton
Is a full bodied mouthful of black currants, minerals, spices, grippy tannins and enough energy to evolve for another decade.

Château de Saint-Cosme

Gigondas Red Rhone Blend 2015

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of dinner which lasted a couple do hours. The 2015 pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with moderate staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of powerful ripe red and dark fruit: black brambles, dark cherries, black pepper, boozy Christmas fruitcake, licorice, garrigue, leather and rocky earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with sneaky medium+ tanning that build with air. The acid is there too although I wouldn’t call it the main character. It does, however, play a strong supporting roll. Definitely a wine of texture. It has been a handful of years since my last bottle of the 2015 and it’s evolving very nicely! Secondary flavors are starting to show and everything remains balanced. Extended air did get it to freshen up a bit so I’d say this still has a long life ahead. Drink now with a healthy decant and through 2035. — 3 months ago

Côtes du Rhône Syrah 2012

Mag! Last of 6 that I bought back in 2014 for $15 each. What a steal and has aged so well. 100% Syrah. Dark purple, black plum. blackberry, olive tapenade, med tannins. — 4 months ago

Château Beychevelle

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1986

Another oldie, probably just past its peak. 38 years old - not bad! Barn-sided red with some brick on the edge. Lots of cedar, graphite, black pepper and cigar ash to smell but little fruit. Nice smooth tannins, still a little puckering. Medium acidity. For flavor there are some darker berries and red cherry notes. It’s a nicely balanced wine. Good length on the finish. — 10 months ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Les Pagodes de Cos Saint-Estéphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

#AgedWineTuesday

Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.

Beautiful nose of black fruits, cedar, licorice, light vanilla, espresso, chocolates, earth, light vegetables, tobacco leaf, eacaliptus, Indian spices and black pepper.

Full-bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, black plums, light cedar, earth, herbs, light vanilla, dark chocolates, coffee, peppercorn, earth, black tea and a touch of vegetables.

Long spicy finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cherries.

This second wine from the great 2010 vintage in Bordeaux, is drinking gorgeously now. Nicely balanced with a great mouthfeel. Elegant with lots of fruits.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 2 hours in the decanter, when tannins show up. Changes every 20 minutes in the decanter. So nice to experience.

I had this vintage 5 years ago and it is drinking better now. This 14 year old is peaking now, and will continue to drink nicely in the next 5 to 10 years.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and paired nicely with dried meats.

A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot.

14% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$90.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 1978

When 78 Ducru is on it’s an amazing example of aged Bordeaux but they’re incredibly inconsistent. This was a stunning bottle but two were corked before it. A perfect pairing with black truffle tagliatelle. — 3 months ago

Château Gloria

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2021

2022 vintage. Deep dark red, with purplish rim. Very attractive nose already, with cassis, blackberries, raspberries, flowers and subtle cedar.
Midweight, with layers of succulent black and red fruits and fresh acidity, embedded in a ripe tannic structure. Great length, with a distinctive mineral touch. Not sure if it is as good as the incredible 2016, but a close contender for one of the best wines ever for this estate. Abv. 13%. It totally outperforms the Croizet Bages 2022 tasted alongside.

Ultreia Saint Jacques Mencía

Suggested at Grand Cata on 11/29/2024 when I asked for Ribera sacra bzw. Galicia. $30. L noted Chambers had shipped same wine! Likely natural then, though lacking that liveliness. Drank 11/30/2024. Ash, bubble gum on nose. Puckett tannins will likely settle down with time and warmth. Black fruit, violets, gravel/slate. Long strong finish lingers. — 5 months ago

Château Lassègue

Saint Émilion Red Bordeaux Blend 2017

Deep ruby. Aromas of blackberry, licorice, earthy and herbs. Fantastic structure to this Bordeaux. Black fruits that go on for a while with a tannic finish.

Saint-Joseph Syrah 2020

My wife said it smelled like fart but to my nose pure barnyard, it dissipated (does that make it more fart-like?). Mid-weight and gorgeously textured Syrah with no hard edges, tangy ripe red berry, black tapenade, white pepper and leathery tones in a velvety package. Needed a short decant and was a super match for braised rib. — 8 months ago

Domaine Dujac

Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2006

The 2006 Clos Saint-Denis pours a deep ruby color with a transparent core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of tart and ripe red and black fruits: raspberry, strawberry, black cherry, eastern spices, a touch herbal and nice minerals, almost like red and purple Flintstone vitamins. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. While I can sort of understand the mixed opinions on this wine/vintage combo, I personally think this needs a lot more time. Secondary characteristics are still not really showing and the fruit and structure are still very much intact. And even in this early window, I thought this was baller alongside some absolute bangers…it just needs a lot more time. Concentrated. Desperately wanted to try this on Day 2. Drink with patience and through 2056. — 2 months ago

Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (41%), Merlot (50%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (2%), aged in French oak, 45% new, same ownership as Lynch-Bages. Deep Ruby red color with aromas of red and black fruits with smoky spice. On the palate flavors of black raspberry, currants and black cherry with licorice, toasty oak and tobacco. Fine tannins, long finish ending with fruit, oak and earthy tobacco spice. Starting to drink well now and will continue to develop! — 3 months ago

2022 vintage. First vintage under Lorenzetti ownership. Oak dominating initially, needs a few hours to open up. Concentrated black fruit with serious oak influence. Lots of potential, but doesn't have the charm of the 2020 today. Ab. 14,,5% — 6 months ago

Château Langoa Barton

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

2009 vintage. Big fill. Excellent cork. Low sed. Decanted and tasted after 20 mins, 1 hour and 2 hours. Excellent color. Light-medium body. Not quite as feminine as Leoville-Barton but not far behind. Softer with a small accent of black olive and newly dampened earth. Holding up well. Not a candidate to go hard for another 10-spot but look to crush in the next 5-6 years before it starts dropping off precipitously. 8.7.24. — 9 months ago
