Turley

Dragon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Beginning to explore some CA cabs. The ‘21 Dragon Vineyard from Turley, one of my staples for Zins and Petite Sirahs, was deep, opaque purple to the edge; lots of mineral, pencil lead and dark berry scents on the nose; loaded with dark fruits, earthy/woodsy flavors and sharp tannins that will benefit from more time in the bottle. — 12 days ago

Dragon God Ginjo Namazume

I’m torn. I don’t usually care for super sweet sakes, and this one is definitely that, but I had a ton of fun drinking this. This thing is HUGE. Almost overwhelming notes of cantaloupe, honeydew, banana, kiwi and pineapple are all up in your face when this hits your lips. It’s got plenty of alcohol to cut through the rich sweetness but almost no acidity. It’s lush and boozy and a hell of a good time, even if I wouldn’t call it a great sake overall. — 23 days ago

Le Dragon Alsace Riesling 2019

My first Alsace riesling - sad I know!! Unmistakeable riesling nose - sweet stone fruit, mixed with petrol. High acid, but the overt sweetness on the nose is more controlled on the palate. Honey and sweet apple notes on a crisp, persistent finish. — 3 months ago

Dragon Stone Rheingau Riesling 2021

Very slightly off dry, nice and bright, lemony, apple, Asian pear. Tiny bit of limestone. Not super complex, but very lovely. — 9 months ago

Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 1961

Stunning. I often find I prefer LdH reasonably younger (GRs at the 10-15 year mark). This was vigorous, gorgeous, and very fine. Tiny bit of bricking but really still dark-core garnet color right on pour. Lovely nose of warm red fruit, flowers, that iconic snap of VA, and some forest floor action. But much less mushroomy & evolved than many other 70s GRs from the same house. Haunting, long palate true to nose— structured, crunchy fruit with no hard edges. Exceptionally long & evolving the whole time. All in all this has decades ahead and is evolving slowly and marvelously. No rush to drink up just to drink. — a year ago
