Château Giscours

Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

2009 vintage. Generous fill. Fairy tale cork. Decanted and tasted after 30 mins. Just a little bit of sed. Light-medium body as is the usual Giscours style. Some cherry prettiness melded with dusty earth and appropriate tannic presence. Nose a bit of dark plum that wasn’t forwarded onto the flavor platform-at least at the opportunity I had to enjoy it. Never an explosive style from this Château and this was opened about 5-7 years too early to hit the top of the specific bell curve. Drinking very very nicely now and (easily) for the next decade +. 4.20.24. — a month ago

Château Branaire (Duluc-Ducru)

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2018

Wonderful Bordeaux blend from Saint-Julien. Super dry dark blue fruit seamlessly integrated with aged wood notes of dark chocolate, raw tobacco and leather (remember chewing on this as a kid 😁) and smooth rounded tannins. A great wine to just sip, reminisce and… wondering where the oldest vineyard in the world might be? You want to know? Annual birthday WWC hosting. As normal, 1 sparkler, 3 whites, 4 reds, 1 dessert, all presented blind.

Fun to open birth year wines around your birthday, especially when you can do a Bordeaux and Napa side by side. While not a great vintage, this held up well after a few hours and presented as expected. Clean and zero Brett. Great color! Deep ruby with hardly any bricking. Leather, cassis, vanilla pipe tobacco on the nose. Sporting a good bit of dusty red and black fruits (mostly tart raspberries and blackberries), there was a little savory truffle note mixed with an herbal and mocha finish. Still quite grippy. Pretty.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Saint-Julien Red Bordeaux Blend

Precise, minty, fresh. Subtle on the entrance then arrives a great weight. Quite tipical Ducru-Beaucaillou even tho is lacking a form of depth to make it very great. It’s probably just that bit too austere. — 24 days ago

Grand Cru Classé en 1855 Margaux Red Bordeaux Blend 2023

Beautiful pure nose. Lacking mid palate deepness at this stage but overall a very nice and well balanced wine. Tannins are well integrated. Closes a bit harsh but this will surely improve with time. — 25 days ago

Château Sociando-Mallet

Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend 2020

2020 vintage. Big, darkly-fruited nose that rolls over to the flavors. Medium body. Great complexity for initial and mid-palates, Finish is where things drop off a cliff. Solid banger for the price. If only some of that impressive, frontal assault could be transferred to the back end, we'd be in clover. Nice, first-time BDX to get the palate rolling/draw people in tho. 3.15.24. — 2 months ago
