Domaine Jean-Louis Chave

Hermitage Syrah 2001

This bottle was a library release from the Chave cellars. Decanted about an hour prior to service (but could have benefited from more time) and enjoyed over the course of several hours. The 2001 Chave rouge pours a deep ruby/purple color with a near opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of charred blueberry pie, mushrooms, scorched earth, grilled meat, coffee, black pepper and soft baking spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannins and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and super complex. With more and more air, this really came into its own. Totally Chave. Totally Hermitage. Totally awesome. Drink now with a little patience and through 2041. — 20 days ago

@Lyle Fass I have not had an opportunity to enjoy either but I hope that changes!

@Jay Kline less ripe years pre 2004 I adore. After 2004 I find the wines are more forced, modern and “made.”

This has chilled out and has relaxed. No dosage, but it has evolved to a sweeter place. Really presentable now. Just needed 20 years to come around 😀 — a day ago

Domaine Sainte Claire Chablis Chardonnay 2022

Rounder than most Chablis, & while not soul shifting, perfectly pitched for an end of day heat wave, paired with roast chicken. — 11 days ago

"Cuvée Corcelette" Morgon Gamay 2021

Nice to open one of these, but would give future bottles more time - check back in 3 years, perhaps. A bit hazy in the glass and some good earth mixed with the tannins on the palate. One that needs food for sure, especially right now. — 12 days ago

Domaine des Héritiers Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2020

Delectable Wine
9.3

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru doesn't possess the delineation and panache of Tollot-Beaut's on the nose at first, though it coheres nicely with aeration. Peach skin, linseed and wilted white flowers eventually come through. The palate is well-balanced with a viscous entry, a little more honeyed in style than previous wines in this flight of Corton-Charlemagne, though it deserves applause for the precision and detail on the finish. It needs a little more time in the bottle compared to others because there is a lot of coconut-ty new oak. My score is based on this being assimilated with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, July 2024)
