Cuvée des Vignes Centenaires Cahors Malbec 1998

Stunningly deep nose of cassis, tree bark, spice and wild mint. A scene in nature. Plum. Such pure fruit. Also violets. Super floral, but darker flowers. Crushed rocks and wet earth. As classic as it gets. The first growth of Cahors. Palate is silky and textured with amazing depth. Superb sap, power and concentration. Such class and finesse. So refined and elegant. Ripe and substantial tannins and but again so refined. Amazing length. Brilliant wine. Unreal freshness. Sappy and deep. Has the guts to go 35 more years. Profound.

As this opens it gets so velvety, so sappy, so elegant. Just a brilliant bottle.

Fantastic Beaujolais. Only complaint is the red wax they dip the top of the wine in crumbles everywhere when you are trying to chisel it away. Sweet cherries on the nose. Booming acidity. Another find from the cellar that I don’t even remember buying. Thoroughly going to enjoy this while the sleet hammers the windows while watching the Masters. — a month ago

Coudoulet de Beaucastel Cotes-du-Rhone Red Rhone Blend 2019

2019 vintage. The backstory of this wine is essential. The powers that be pushed the A7 highway through Châteauneuf-du-Pape back in the day and relegated this wine/area to Côtes-du-Rhône status. Freeways/highways being the new geographical rivers/mountains/boundaries. Same soil. Same grapes. Same winemaking. The ‘19 vintage not to be missed in Southern (or Northern) Rhône. A “baby” Châteauneuf at roughly a third of the usual Beaucastel CDP pricing. Explosive, dark and dense fruit with particular emphasis on plummy qualities. Some sweetness due to the vintage. Absolutely lip-smacking and undeniably, super-drinkable. — a month ago
