Terres Blanches Beaumes-de-Venise Rouge 2022

Memory notes. Big and loose-boned and flow-ey. The nose had loads of spicy blackberry fruit and intense garrigue earthy/herbal notes. Soft textured. Lowish acids. — 16 days ago

Might just be the best Rose Champagne. Nothing like this. Scarlett color, ripe strawberry, red beet, pink peppercorn, hibiscus. — 5 years ago

Morgon Gamay 2022

Always well made and always a great value. Nose needs some air to coax it out. But then there’s gorgeously pure black cherry and crushed stone powder. Mouthfilling flavors of dark, ripe fruit and minerality. Fairly long finish. Seems very tight, and there’s good acidity and some noticeable tannin, so this looks like a sure bet for improvement over the next few years at least. 9.1 for now but I’m pretty sure there’s upside. — 5 days ago

@Tom Casagrande, I adore Jean-Paul Brun, tasted in his cellars in Charnay a few times, and met him at multiple trade tastings in SF that his buddy Eric Texier used to get us into (Eric’s cellars are 5-7 minutes away from J-P). Since he strives for a Burgundian-style, his wines always seem to show great acidity and a capacity to go 5 to 10 years in the cellar.

Good value northern Rhône syrah. Lots of the standard markers: dark cherry, blueberry, black olive, some smoky bacon. Medium tannins, firm but not overpowering. — 6 months ago

Val de Mer Bourgogne Blanc Chardonnay 2023

Presented double-blind at Tasting Group. The wine pours a straw color; medium viscosity with no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tropical fruit, lemon citrus, white and yellow flowers, and slivered almond. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and creamy, leesy. Ooof…another neutral white.

Initial conclusions: this could be Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris from France or the United States. There is no oak (possibly neutral oak but I think it’s lees contact). So I’m going with my gut and calling this Chardonnay, France, Burgundy, Chablis, 2022. Ha! Patrick Piuze is a Chablis producer but this wine uses grapes outside of the zone, hence the Bourgogne Blanc designation. Tricky wine but I’ll take it. Drink now through 2033.
