2013: Classic Vallpolicella, a “half Amarone” ripasso. Dense, inky, mouth-coating, full-bodied without too much sweetness and with some barnyard funk. I only wish it had a bit more grip: was more enjoyable early on when the tannins were more evident. Could be a function of the good-but-not-great vintage, but I slightly prefer Quintarelli for this kind of pocket change ($95, VR). — 4 years ago
Caymus is too commercialized for me.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really well made Napa Cab…. BUT. You can get it at any LCBO, and the quantity is pretty much endless.
Enough of the rant: dark fruit. Oak.
Back to the rant… for the price I can buy any Italian wine not named Gaja or Quintarelli.
Whatever.

As per previous tasting note 107 weeks ago. Love these succulent lush savoury fruited Amarones. Priuney notes with dried raisin, milk chocolate, leather, red licorice, tobacco and a touch of cinnamon. On the full bodied palate quite sweet fruited with raisin and milk chocolate flavours finishing with soft largely resolved supple tannins. Good QPR for an Amarone. Nothing like the price of a Quintarelli. — 5 years ago

The origins of the Damilano family dates back to over a century ago, when Guiseppe Borgogno, the great-grandfather of the current owners, started to grow and make wine from his own grapes. Medium Ruby with aromas of fresh berry fruits and generous spice. On the palate this medium body wine shows flavors of juicy cherry and blackberry with notes of citrus and vanilla spice. Light tannin structure, lively acidity, medium ending with fruit finish. Nice value. Drink now, consistent, no aging benefit. — 2 years ago
Just the best in the world — 4 years ago
Beautiful, rich berry notes! A $22 Last Bottle special. Great acid structure but the berry is overwhelming. It’s very close to what I’d expect from Quintarelli! Just a fantastic buy! Having it with Pumpkin Ramen soup with some kick… great balance! I’m impressed. — 4 years ago
Perhaps no Valpolicella Superiore deserves more than 9, but this is the best in this style that I have had. (I am not counting Dal Forno Romano or Quintarelli, which are really baby Amarones.) I drank this chilled with penne alla vodka, and it paired perfectly. This wine is light and fruity, but also has a rich cranberry flavor. A nice value for $30. — 5 years ago
Rich red fruit and dried plum spices, elegant balance and not overtly sweet. — 6 years ago

Didn’t want to finish it but all great, fantastic wine must end.... — 8 years ago

I have not had a lot of luck with Amarone in the US but this one in the Veneto is excellent - far less austere than the Quintarelli last night, more versatile across different dishes but also maybe a touch more acidic — 2 years ago
Hard to not drink young…ripe, complex, balanced. I admit to loving Zinfandel with food, and Ridge is right at the top. Blackberry, cherry, plum…noticeably tannic, but works like a charm with my renowned six-hour pasta fagiole and a healthy slug of quintarelli olive oil. Zin and pasta, zin and burgers, zin and ribs…just YUM! — 3 years ago
Lack of acidity is what avoids this wine to be a perfect one. But that was already expected. Absolutely gorgeous. — 4 years ago
Baby amarone with incredible freshness and elegance—winemaker cut his teeth at quintarelli so no surprise. Nose has ripe red cherries and a floral / herbal sensibility, flavors carry through to the palate with amazing concentration but not heavy or syrupy at all, with accents of licorice and cinnamon. 14.5% abv without a trace of heat. A joke at sub-$30 — 5 years ago

Our trusty Amarone from Guiseppe Campagnola. This one was 10 years old. Burst of flavors. Lacking some of the intense spice and tannin structure. — a year ago
