Lovely wine. It’s wild that recent releases go for $200+ per bottle. Bought for $40 from vinchicago many years ago, after having at Terete in Haro, Rioja on our honeymoon.

Paired with grilled leg of lamb marinated with garlic, rosemary, thyme, and orange. Opened 4 hours ahead and decanted an hour. Not quite as deep as the last bottle (2+ years ago) but still very delicious. Wonderful example of what well made top quality Rioja can be. Incredible depth on the palate and finish. Ruby with complex fruit aromas, spice and oak. Blend of 90% Tempranillo & 10% Graciano, aged 48 months on American oak, 20% new. On the palate flavors of dark berry fruits with spice, oak and smoky earthy notes, slight vanilla nuances on ripe full soft silky tannins. Blend of mostly Tempranillo with about equal amounts of Garnacho, Graciano and Manzuelo, deep Ruby with a graceful bouquet of berry fruits, cigar box spice with fresh earthy tones, a traditional Rioja, still reticent. On the silky smooth palate, elegant with layers of flavors of ripe blackberry and cherry, tobacco, smoky cedar, dark fruit, vanilla spice, very well balanced with fine soft tannins and a clean structure ending with a nice long chalky earthy character. I generally like canary island reds ie listan negro quite a bit. This one veered a bit too austere for me. Some nice refined dark fruit and a lot of peppery herbs. Mouthfeel and finish are slightly thin, but the acid is certainly there and this still feels complete and well made. Just not quite giving enough. — 2 months ago
