Château Thivin

Côte de Brouilly Gamay 2014

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of two days. Consistent throughout. The 2014 pours a slightly hazy purple/garnet color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and tart strawberry, blackberry, purple flowers, dried green herbs, horse blanket and rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose, the finish is medium. A Côte de Brouilly of great character. Drink now through 2034. — 2 months ago

Comte Armand

Clos des Epeneaux Monopole Pommard 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2010

Pale to mid Ruby. A sooty earthy savoury red fruited note with raspberry and new leather. The palate is reserved yet with M+ intensity. Delicate yet assertive. Still very fresh for its age. Elegant with enough palate weight to make it totally enjoyable. Benjamin Leroux was the winemaker who has gone on to more accolades with his own label. Jasper Morris thought that this was the best wine made by Benjamin Leroux during his 14 year tenure at Domaine du Comte Armand. Would go on for several more years if you were lucky enough to be holding some. Pommard is another commune which has no Grand Crus but this must be one of the best Premier Crus. I concur with Jasper Morris MW when he had a bottle of this very wine with friends when he said “we were very sad to finish the bottle “. My son Hugh bought this wine for me from Sotheby’s NY in December 2013 and brought it home in his luggage for Christmas that year and I am so glad he did. This is one of the 1001 Wines. — 5 months ago

Domaine des Lambrays

Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2015

First sentence is a tester. Now the full note. We don’t often have Grand Cru Burgundy but we had roast duck legs on Mother’s Day. An intensity to the nose - Sous Bois/Compost heap with savoury red fruits - smoky with a hint of pepper. Many of the experts are saying a high influence of stems in the ferment is apparent and I totally agree. Interestingly Richard Hemming MW gave the wine 19.5/20 and said “This is what all the Burgundy fuss is all about.” Continuing to evaluate - this wine has a beautiful nose (very Morey one taster said). In summary a magnificent wine with great persistence. One of the 1001 Wines. Clos des Lambrays can trace its history back to the 14th century. — 2 months ago

Clavoillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2010

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2010 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru “Clavoillon” pours a straw color with medium viscosity. On the nose, the wine is developing with powerful notes of green apple, tropical fruit, stone fruit, lemon meringue, white flowers, nuts and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long and slightly savory. Again, we were spared from premox; hallelujah! When Leflaive hits, it’s amongst the best in Burgundy. Drink now through 2035. — 2 months ago

Domaine de L'Arlot

Clos des Forêts St. Georges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2013

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of an hour. The 2013 pours a deep, slightly hazy ruby color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with beautiful notes of strawberry, raspberry, dried roses, sous bois, licorice, dried green herbs, gentle warm spices and limestone minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and full of rustic character. In general, the 2013 vintage in Burgundy is on fire right now. And as far as Domaine de l’Arlot is concerned, I adore these wines and wish I could drink them more often. Drink now through 2038. — 2 months ago

La Mouline Côte-Rôtie Syrah 2005

Opened prior to dinner and enjoyed over the course of a few hours. The wine pours a deep ruby/purple color with an opaque core; medium+ viscosity with significant staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of ripe and desiccated black and red fruits: mixed brambles, Flintstone vitamins, spiced meat, olives, purple flowers, black pepper, dried herbs, rocky earth, a mix of cool and warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. Similar to the 1997 we tasted alongside, with all of the same notes except this brought back the familiar Flintstone vitamins that I have encountered in La Mouline from the past. The structure was also more substantial. I preferred this to the 1997 tonight…but I’m splitting hairs! — 3 months ago

Domaine Leflaive

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru Chardonnay 2004

More or less the same aspect as the Pucelles, medium gold in colour . A lot more reserved and younger on the nose , more linear and mineral , seashell, light lemon and some white flowers . This is discreet , at least on the nose , on the palate however this is intense but linear and focused , with a touch of lemon oil , but mostly chalky mineral , seashell notes , long vibrant length . Really fresh and vital though there is good mouthfeel , just a hint of toastiness on the finish . Long and fine , fresh and still young . From now and over the next 5- 10 years . Also a late release from the domaine , with wax capsule and Diam cork. — 2 months ago

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC)

Grands Échézeaux Pinot Noir 2005

It’s always a special treat to drink any bottle of DRC and this bottle of Grand Echezeaux felt extra special. Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of a couple hour. The 2005 pours a hazy ruby color with a translucent core; medium viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, the wine is developing with ripe notes of black cherry, blackberry, strawberry, red flowers, cumin, sous bois, licorice, dried green herbs, and gentle warm spices. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium+ tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long. In true DRC style, the balance is impeccable and this is showing well; early in its prime. Drink now with through 2055. Bottle No. 2210/11809 — 2 months ago

Deep Ruby color with aromas of black fruits, cedar, citrus, herbs and floral spice. On the palate flavors of cherry, cranberry and blackberry with floral and sweet herb spice notes.
