La Cuadrilla Ballard Canyon Red Blend 2018

Meaty, satisfying Syrah blend. Rich nose features beef blood and beef jerky, wet volcanic gravel, ripe elderberry, baking spice. On the palate it’s dark, ripe, and quite fruity. There’s some soft tannin in the clingy finish. Not super complex but a satisfying mouthful. — a month ago

Cool wine, TBH it took 3D to come around the last time we had, then it was amazing.

Old Vines Washington Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Wow! 18yr Wa Cab- still got it. Seamless flavors. Tannins and fruits are still doing their job. Think might even have a few more years. — 4 months ago

Chiles Canyon Vineyards Zinfandel 2016

A solid, large-framed Zin. Dark, brambly blackberries, together with the telltale sign that they wanted a ripe style: a note of maple syrup. Some crushed sandstony gravel. Full-flavored, ripe dark fruit coats the palate, but it’s fortunately dry (no residual sugar like a lot of Zins these days). Acids on the low side. Tannins soft. At it peak. — 2 months ago

Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

2009. Nice cab. Inky color, cassis, toast, vanilla (American oak?), dried herbs, mushroom, menthol/eucalyptus and nice acid. Really good time to drink, but can easily go longer. — 2 months ago

Ballard Canyon Estate Syrah 2007

At 15 years this #santabarbara #syrah is fully evolved. Cork condition looked approachable initially but it was crumbly with initial attempts from my Rabbit-style opener. The Ah-So made easy work of the dry cork from there. Pours a deep purple into glass fading it magenta, ruby and slight bricking at the edge. Half an hour in the glass from cellar temperature enticing blackberry compote, beef jerky, charcuterie notes and a slightly peppery cumin note that reminds me of taco seasoning in ground beef. I had to smell this compulsively in my Zalto glass. Palate shows this wine’s age - primary fruit mostly faded away, some coffee, caramel tertiary notes but lovely peppery bite on the finish. Acidity has trailed off as well along with most of the tannins. Marvelous single vineyard SB Syrah. — 2 months ago

Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah 2020

Delectable Wine
9.4

The 2020 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is a dense, potent wine. The purity of the fruit is remarkable. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2020 is still incredibly primary. Inky red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and rose petal open with a bit of coaxing. All this needs is time and a bit more polish. As always, the Colson Canyon Syrah is one of the most distinctive wines in Joey Tensley's range. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, August 2022)
