The Mascot

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Jan A
9.4

The Mascot is made from the young vines of Harlan, Promitory and Bond and you can really taste the royal pedigree here. Still in the fruit/primary phase with drying tannins. Very singular palate with a lot of concentration. Give these some additional cellar time to really shine. 95/96 potential — 3 years ago

A singular expression of SB that with this bottle matches the reputation and expectation. I keep these no more than 10 years and like others on CT have experienced multiple oxidized bottles. — 3 years ago

This is not your beach quaff rose. Everything written by the other reviewers on this site is true and more. A singular, incredibly complex wine the deserves the hype. Next bottles get several hours of slow ox. — 4 years ago

Such a deep, complex and aromatic nose. Deep mid season cherry and overwhelming spice. Such stunning spice. Singular. Super earthy and mineral. Like a MSD 1er Cru or SLB Dominode. But so elegant and precise. Really stunning nose. A nose one can sniff and sniff. 9.7 nose. Genius. Leaves. Sweet leaves and sweet spices. Baking spices and such vivid cherry fruit. OMH the purity, finesse and balance here are just divine as is the sweetness. Such sweet cherry fruit and dense yet nimble. This is so stunning and so insane. Balance is perfect. This really is special. Amazing length and just as pure as pure can be. So complex, tangy sweet and fresh. Just spellbound by this.

After a few hours this is a dazzler and the complexity and ethereal qualities light up. The sweetness that was initially there is now balanced by pronounced minerality. Thrilling Pinot.

Elevated by the vintage. Over its arc, either lacked complexity or was defined by singular characteristics. Still, great showing. — 3 years ago

Savasol Menu Pineau 2015

New Year’s Eve leftovers forgotten (open) in the fridge after an epic night and a full day of napping. So after 36 hours it’s still pretty righteous amber bliss, a bitter edge with singular notes of butterscotch, anise, petrol, citrus rind, pine, and the faintest bit of untanned leather on the way way back....nice performance. very easy late morning armchair drinking. vendor says 2015 but the bottle is not marked. — 5 years ago

Vent d'Ange Chablis Chardonnay 2020

Fascinating. Still some old style chablis character with seashell and saline notes, but a suggestion of an almost oxidative style. Excellent acidity, lemon, soft chalk on the palate. Good length and somewhat singular. Another excellent pairing. — 3 years ago

Château Musar

Bekaa Valley Red Blend 2000

Popped and poured; no formal notes. The 2000 Chateau Musar Grand Vin Rouge pours a deep, slightly hazy garnet color with some signs of sediment. On the nose, this is drop dead gorgeous with all the vibes I would come to expect from a 20+ year old Musar. Clearly a vinous wine with a wonderful mix of red and dark fruit; mostly ripe while some dried fruits are beginning to appear. Earthy characteristics were also playing a strong supporting role along with sweet pipe tobacco, leather, some red and purple flowers, some green herbs, exotic spices and there was a touch of brettanomyces but nothing out of control. On the palate, the wine was quite spry with ample structure still; firm tanning and lovely acid. The finish was long and simply to die for. Musar's Grand Vin Rouge is often compared to some of the great wines from Bordeaux however, I have traditionally eschewed this comparison as I have found these wines to be almost singular. That being said, this bottle was far and away the most relatable to Bordeaux that I have so far experienced. It should also be noted that this bottle came to me ex-chateau a couple of years back and provenance likely had something to do with the strength of this showing. It was a fabulous pairing with grilled lamb chops and fattoush. Based off this experience, I expect well stored examples to drink well for at least another decade and likely, longer than that. — 3 years ago

Roses de Jeanne Les Ursules Blanc de Noirs Champagne 2017

Love this Cuvée. First time trying 2017, which Bouchard clearly nailed. Elected to not decant, and just go with a Burgundy glass. It’s highly aromatic for Champagne, revealing layers of rich orchard fruits, perfumed citrus oils and a touch of gun smoke. The palate is creamy and satiny, so textural and so giving. Such a singular, vinous Champagne and the perfect example of Bouchard’s style. Love these wines, and really impressed with how well 2017 is drinking already. — 4 years ago

Guillaume Selosse

Au-dessus du Gros Mont Champagne Chardonnay

My second time having this ultra rare bottle, it has to be one of my absolute favorite Champagnes. Coming from 70+ year old vines (given to Guillaume on his 18th birthday from his grandmother), this singular and stunning bottling shows layers and layers of caramelized orchard fruit, roasted nuts, toffee, oak spice, and a touch of lavender, all held together by its chalky minerality. There is incredible depth on the palate, with a seamless marriage of richness and elegance. Wow, I wish I had more of this in my life 😅 — 4 years ago
