Big Basin Vineyards

Homestead Block Roussanne 2017

Nicely done. I like the Amphora texture and acidity. Queveri-ish. Good food wine. For on its own enjoyment, would love to see lightly topped with late harvest Roussanne. Lemon+Honey 🐝

I also want to bury the Amphora ceremoniously, with you (Bradley) and Randall Grahm.... on an eclipse/lunar biodynamic magical night, you already got the patio with a firepit to fulfill the bonfire... cow horns and crystals for everyone :) haha

Modri Pinot Noir

Had several wines from this producer recently and have been amazing impressed. Doing a lot of cool stuff with biodynamic farming techniques, and I've heard even harvests around the lunar calendar? Regardless, it's working and thus wasn't any exception. If you doubt you can grow great Pinot in Slovenia give this a try. Delicate floral notes with some dark playful raspberry and cherry flavors with a fun funkiness to it. Great acidity balance, and a lingering finish. — 7 years ago

It's western Slovenia near the Italian border. I believe it is in the foothills of some mountains so they have a fairly mild climate with warm days and chilly nights!

Brut Blanc de Blancs Millesime Champagne Chardonnay 2002

This was a gift to us from our wedding and wow what a gift. Toasty yeast and stewed apples up front, sweeter palate with apples and a nuttiness from the yeast. Fairly short finish and smoother mousse, likely due to its age. Happy Lunar New Year! Xīn nián kuài lè! — 4 years ago

The Swiss drink their own wine. Its fantastic and they don’t share it with the world. One side of the lake is Switzerland the other side is France. What’s the difference?

Much more interesting version of Sauvignon Blanc and less expensive version of white burgundy. Held up well with winter veggies, scallops and pig liver.

Christophe Mignon

Extra Brut Champagne Pinot Meunier

Dealing with one of the masters of Meunier here and it is positively gorgeous. Medium gold color with tiny bubbles and wonderful creaminess. The nose is harmonious, as is the entire package, showcasing chamomile, white flowers, and tea. Citrus rind and brioche explode from the glass, with spice and a rather decadent streak of honey running throughout.

Already set apart from other Growers, Mignon’s winemaking is about as natural as you can get and dictated by the lunar cycle. 100% Pinot Meunier, this is a blend of the 2014 and 15 vintages, it was disgorged in August of 19. Low dosage at between 2 and 5 g/l and you definitely feel it. Strikingly and gloriously bitter, this is just a joy to drink.

Dry with very crisp acidity, this has amazing texture and structure. The palate shows orchard fruits, plums, and rose petals up front with more drizzled honey and pears. Apricots and toasty biscuits abound. The finish is long and pure. This could certainly benefit from a few more years on the shelf but it’s fun right now. Pure elegance.

Les Borniques Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2012

Classic chambolle. Elegance is the word! Complex and clean nose with red currant, cherry, roses and primordial earthiness. On the palate, seductive elegance with a silky texture and feather like mouthfeel and outstanding linearity. It slowly peels away the complexity with layers of red fruits, roses and the classic limestone undertones. Borniques is biodynamically farmed with winemaking synched with lunar cycles on a small parcel of 1.4 ha situated right above the famous ‘Les Amoureuses’ with vines planted almost on the rock. It explains the very linear structure. The tannins, acidity and alcohol were in brilliant harmony with a finish where the dance continues for well over 2 mins. I loved this and it reminded me why Chambolle-Musigny is one of my absolute favorite villages in Burgundy. — 3 years ago

Beer Geek Breakfast Oatmeal Stout Brewed with Coffee

Huge milk chocoalate to Cappuccino colored eruption of thickest froth dwindles, flattening to a lunar landscape. Dark chocolate and coffee elements initiate. Machinery. Roasted almond-in-shell, vanilla and hazelnut aromas. This stout will zap the tongue with malty coffee notes that feel like a 9 volt battery connection, then shimmer in bitter arabica, dried violet, valerian root, nutmeg, clove tinges of ginger. The whole almost suggests licorice, but the flavor isolates encourage soloism. Dark chocolate abates, revealing rich roasted coffee in a splendid finish. Launch into the darkest astral day with the breakfast for champion cosmonauts. — 5 years ago
