Good Pair Days

Castello di Amorosa

Napa Valley Sangiovese 2018

A very pretty color of ruby with a wide reddish/ brownish rim.

Fruity nose with raspberries, cherries, black currants, black plums, light oak, light vanilla, Mediterranean spices, licorice, chocolates, tobacco and herbs.

Medium bodied and smooth, with medium acidity.

Dry on the palate with black currants, plums, cooked cherries, green herbs, oak, earth, light vanilla, peppercorn and tobacco leaf.

Tangy finish with fine grained tannins and cranberries.

This is a very tasty and interesting Sangiovese from Napa Valley. Nicely balanced, tangy and fruit forward. Soft and elegant.

Needs a few hours in the decanter to open up properly, smooth out, and remove some of the acidity. I really enjoyed it after 3 hours.

An interesting expression of Sangiovese. Feels like a blend of old and new worlds.

The high alcohol is very integrated, so watch out.

I had the 2017 before, and it is very consistent.

A good food wine, but good by itself as well. I paired it with cheeses and light appetizers. Will pair nicely with red sauce Italian dishes.

A blend of 96% Sangiovese and 4% Merlot. Aged in French oak barrels for 18 months (35% new).

14.9% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

Let the wine breathe for an hour or two before it's best. Pair with Thai food or fat ribeye steaks is good. Enjoy!

Ramey Wine Cellars

Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay

To pair with a creamy Risotto with Scallops and fresh basil, herbs, and the first Zucchini’s and baby yellow Tomatoes of our garden. A bit of a spritz/bubbles feel at the opening that goes away after a while, nose also has lemon and clearly some buttery notes and of course some oak. The palate is good with decent enough acidity to support the richness and density of the wine, with time in the glass and warming up slightly, it is a delicious chardonnay, fresh enough with some salinity also, still oaky for my taste but not too bad and enjoyable. 90 and close to 91 pts

90 voire 91.

Estate Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Haven’t posted in a while but this beauty motivated me to get back in the game. ‘07 but still punches you in the face with plum then sits on your tongue with leather and blackberries with a finish that lasts for days. Tannins have smoothed and made this really good wine a few years ago into a really really good wine. YUM! Happy New Year shout out to the WNH! Domaine Pichot

Domaine Le Peu de la Moriette Vouvray Chenin Blanc 2016

Beautiful wine. Off-dry. Great floral aromatics- and bursting with honey, lemons and ginger. Sweetness and acidity feel very balanced in this vintage. Slightly rounded mouthfeel. Hints of petrol on the 2nd night. This has a lot going on for entry-level Vouvray. Simply a very good, inexpensive Chenin that I would recommend easily and would love to pair with sushi. — 9 years ago

Zombie Dust Undead Pale Ale

Best surprise in a long time, had a bottle sent to me from my college roommate half a country away. Very floral, well hopped balanced with a good malt backbone. A balanced beer more IPA than traditional pale ale. Only 10 days old. Would definitely buy if they ever distributed to CO. — 10 years ago

Smith Madrone

Estate Bottled Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

This is an Interesting Cabernet from Spring Mountain.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing black fruits with cedar, earth, vanilla, spices, vegetables, bitter herbs, green pepper, tobacco leaf, coffee and black pepper.

This Napa Cabernet is still young, and shows lots of earthy notes. Feels like a left bank Bordeaux. The Cabernet franc is very dominant right now.

A good sipping wine with good structure and a nice mouthfeel.

Good right out of the bottle and better with airtime. Would be nice to revisit it in 3 years.

Nicely balanced and good by itself or with food. Will pair nicely with BBQ Meats.

A blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Aged for 21 months in French Oak barrels.

14.3% alcohol by volume.

Surprisingly good. Crisp, light/medium body, and strong citrus notes. Very easy drinking; paired well with a simple chicken and broccoli stir-fry.

Good candidate for an "everyday" wine. Feels like it would pair well with a wide range of dishes.

La Pleiade

Heathcote Shiraz 2009

Purchased at Chapoutier, we had this along side the 2013 vintage. This one was significantly better in my opinion. Less to do with the added time in bottle, I think, and more with the innate quality of the wine. This still had terrific fruit with a balanced structure that gave the wine considerable depth. Enjoyed it over the course of a few days (corked and in the fridge). It definite fell off over that time period, but very gradually and still maintained good balance throughout (unlike the 2013). Terrific shiraz! — 6 years ago

For a 20 year old St Estephe this Cos d’Estournel is sublime. Perfectly aged but shows a lot of youth throughout the hour opening with red fruit mixed in with leather and chalk. A good 35 sec finish. A classic Bordeaux that rocks! Kept from my Phd days ( Rodolphe this is the last one buddy) is surprisingly vibrant. happy birthday 🥳 Philippa. — 7 years ago

Medium gold color. Nose of wax, brown sugar, flowers. On the palate there is not much acidity, flavors of oxidized apples, exotic fruit, flowers, wax, and butter. Shows some evolution but in the same time great depth. A wine to pair with a meal instead of taking it by itself? Very good (89)

Well still quite the surprise for a 13 year old second wine. Medium garnet color very fragrant floral earthy nose with good acidity and weight on palate carrying through to finish with a hint of smokiness. Almost overpowered the plain roast duck but got along nicely with the Momofulu Chili paste that had just that touch of spicy note. Bodes well for the CDPs resting nicely. Did fade in Cali bothers after 3+ days. — 6 years ago

Zwebner Estate Vineyard 24.19 White Blend 2017 Bethlehem, Israel

Light straw in color with a green hue.

Soft nose of green apples, citrus, lemons, minerals and light grapefruits.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity, crisp and refreshing.

Dry on the palate with citrus, limes, green apples, light vegetables, grapefruits, lemon juice, spices and minerals.

Long finish with almonds and limes.

This is a nice surprise. A nice white blend from Israel. Showing mild complexity, and crisp and refreshing when cold. Not bitter which I really liked. Reminds me of a white wine from Northern Loire.

Good by itself as a sipping wine or with food. Will pair very nicely with oysters.

Needs 30 minutes to open up properly as it is a bit watery right out of the bottle.

Very easy to drink, so watch out.

Grapes are grown at 2500 feet elevation. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

12.5% alcohol by volume.

Silver Oak

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Back in the good ol' days of Silver Oak...I bought several on release knowing very little what my wine future would hold. Cellared perfect, green/bell pepper and straight up dust on the nose. Plenty of fruit and tannins with bright acidity. Mouth fills with a ting of cherry, cola and a mineral element. Finish comes then goes. Hint of spice on the back side. — 10 years ago
