Broke Ass

Domaine François Raveneau

Montée de Tonnerre Chablis 1er Cru Chardonnay 1988

Cork broke in half (actually 6-7 pieces), initially some “old cork” flavors show through, yet after 5 minutes in the glass those dissipate and we’re left with a lovely aged Raveneau with mature fruit, some lemon and mineral notes as well, very nice complexity and length, I’ve always been very lucky aging my Raveneau, this is clearly a success (shaky cork notwithstanding)! — 2 days ago

Wow! So cool. I have ZERO experience with Raveneau and ZERO Raveneaus in my cellar. ☹️ so your advice is purely of a hypothetical nature for me. (I’ve been lucky enough to have a few Dauvissats, however.) Did you use a Durand corkscrew? I use that with any 20 year or older bottle. Essential.

@Tom Casagrande, I did not, but the cork broke into so many pieces that I don’t think what cork puller I used mattered (shrug)!

Kick Ass Cabernet Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Deep ruby color. Aromas of strawberry, huckleberry and black currant. Nicely balanced and well worth the price.

Red Ass Rhubarb Red Blend

Quintessential to the history of South Dakota was homemade rhubarb wine! This is a great representation of what tartness can do to balance the sweetness inherent in some of the non-grape wines. Like the tart cherry wines of Michigan, this is iconic of South Dakota. Love it! — 4 years ago

Monte Bello Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2011

It’s been a while. Restaurant life is tough during a pandemic. Feel things on the upswing. Broke out something fabulous. Didn’t disappoint! 2011 vintage. Beautiful fruit, texture, hints of tobacco and leather. Drinking with those I love — 4 years ago

Château de Pez

Saint-Estèphe Cabernet Franc Blend 1990

Wine purchased upon release back in grad school days. Cork broke while opening, but contents were intact and glorious. Superbly integrated and mellow tannin structure is still there. Thanks, Jin-Ook! — 6 years ago

Olga Raffault

Les Picasses Chinon Cabernet Franc 2014

Broke out one of my cellared Raffaults for my homeboy who graced me with a home cooked Tuscan styled flank steak w rosemary & arugula, as well as Israeli cous cous w chickpeas, charred tomatoes, feta, & herbs. Light Cadmium red hued & strong color though ( good cork- not a guarantee w Raffault!); dense Hibiscus, fresh raspberry & some bramble on nose; on palate very clean & smooth mouthfeel, with the initial flavors repeated but a deeper blend of red fruits & a stronger presence of under brush. Super fresh & integrated. Elegant, & the Burgundy echo was hard to ignore. Not Uber complex but not monolithic either, which this line of Raffault can be in its youth ( or as it ages). Very impressive, & accessible now. Curious how my ‘02 & 07s will fare… — 2 years ago

@Peter Sultan I am always surprised this is not on more restaurant wine-lists given the price to quality ratio.

I have no evidence other than anecdotal but I suspect bottle variability- both from my experience and from what wine stores have told me. I imagine too it’s a tricky wine to sell given it can really shut down for periods. But all guesses @Ira Schwartz …..

Bourgogne Chardonnay 2015

So happy to be able to go out to lunch Monday in Iowa..been a long time! Broke a tooth on chips & salsa...Dentist Tuesday..little Periodontist surgery 8 am this morning!! So happy to get off of pain med..codeine gives me a migraine! A glass of wine to ease the day as I relax to 60's folk music.
This Bourgogne is really delicious! Smiles....its been a long day! 🦷🤐 getting better... temporary crown next week!
Update..we finished this wine with a shrimp salad with dinner...this Chardonnay is stunning. New World in style...great fruit..balanced by minerals..slight hints of tropical fruits and a nuttiness all at the same time..presents with a bit of lanolin too! Love this wine!

@Dawn E. Glad you sought out out! I think we have 1 bottle left of the 2013, I might be able to find more, but TBD as we have plenty of other bottles to distract me from needing more of that one. The 1er Cru E-S wines are great, but elusive, expensive and needing years to relax.
