Vigna Rocca Secco Albana di Romagna 2024

First 2024 wine!! This is really excellent - haven’t had this grape (albana) before. Orange but in the way that I like - no overly “natural” funk and instead just excellent stony fruit and some great grip. Very juicy and almost savory with a long finish. Great value at $22. — 15 days ago

Alta Nova

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

This is flagship Cabernet Sauvignon from Alta Nova Vinyards in Napa Valley, CA. a masterpiece from a female winemaker, Britt Richards who has the finesse of vinifying wines from myriad California terroirs (mostly mountains). Electrifying aromas of black forrest, leaves, earth and graphite. It makes an opening to the palate with punchy tannins, elevated but not overpowering acidity and silky, very silky tannins. Polyphenols are super-balanced, it can challenge any mountain-like heavy Cab from Napa as a great contender. Loved the elegant finish. Needs to open for over 2 hours to appreciate its potential and savory notes.

Marilyn Merlot 2017

It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday. Let's bring Merlot back!

Deep purple in color with a wide reddish rim.

Beautiful nose of sweet cherries, black plums, blueberries, Indian spices, cedar, licorice, chocolates, herbs, light earth, black pepper, tobacco and light black tea.

Full-bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with cooked cherries, currants, plums, spices, cedar, licorice, light vanilla, tobacco leaf, herbs, peppercorn, earth, dark chocolates and black coffee.

Long finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.

This delicious 8-year-old Merlot from Napa Valley is drinking beautifully now. Elegant and fruit forward. Soft and complex.

Needs an hour in the decanter to open up properly and show the complexity. Will continue to age nicely in the next few years.

Nicely balanced and spicy with a soft mouthfeel. I had this vintage a few times before, and it is always tasty.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and paired nicely with the Italian beef Prosciutto.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

14.4% alcohol by volume.

92 points.

$65.

Brancaia

Tre Toscana Sangiovese Blend 2022

Mo
8.9

A decent entry-level “Super Tuscan.” I’m curious about its cellaring potential given the WS review below.

WS: 90. Flavors of cherry, strawberry, sanguine, iron and Mediterranean scrub are supported by a solid structure in this red, which is balanced overall, with dusty tannins and a resonant finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2026 through 2040. 27,500 cases made, 10,200 cases imported.

Tre Vigne Dolcetto d'Alba 2022

Some blackberry, Smokey notes, so soft in the mouth. Went very well with risotto and sausage. I have to think that’s the pairing in Piedmont for most people. The average Italian there ain’t drinking Barbaresco every night. — 3 months ago
