Hermit On The Hill

Chappellet

Signature Donn Chappellet Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

2013 vintage. Decanted with a little sed. Great cork. Tremendous power and on the leaner side of the ledger...think bigg vintage Leoville Las Cases or 80's/early 90's Montelena or *gasp* La Jota before the Helen Turley fruit bomb intervention in the early 90’s. Drinking a little "hot" but only at 14.9% ABV. Definite palate-wrecker with tannins for daze. Will take this wine in their lineup nearly every time vs the pricier and smoother Pritchard Hill shizz. The off the charts QPR is easily tasted vs the rest of their Cab/Cab-based lineup. Awesome now but will consolidate even further into a wolverine wine. Be very afraid. If you're looking for a quiet, placid dinner for two, then a rom-com snugglefest, this is not your beautiful house. This is someone else's beautiful wife. 12.01.24. — 7 months ago

Bell Hill Vineyards

Old Weka Pass Road Pinot Noir 2016

See several previous Delectable notes on this wine and vintage. A pale crimson colour with tawny garnet shades. Aromatics of red fruits (strawberry) and Sous Bois on the nose. It may be pale in colour but carries a Medium plus palate intensity of good length. A very good 2nd wine from Bell Hill from the Canterbury district (just to the north of Christchurch) which deserves more recognition as a source of high quality Pinot Noir. Also referred to as the Waipara District. — 9 months ago

Tychson Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

One hour decant(decent amount of sediment). A sumptuous dark ruby red with some bricking. On the nose: Sweet perfume jumps from the glass with black cherry, floral, black olives, and a minty menthol. Let's you know to buckle up....a 4 point harness system buckle up!! Taste: Sweet tannins coat the mouth with dark fruit and jolts of red plum, mocha, cedar, and toasty oak.

A full body, juicy wine with great acidity. A pencil lead/mineral looong finish. Drinking great now and will go another 10 years. Got 2 more bottles...YES!!

1 hour decant(decent fine /cloudy sediment). A striking dark garnet with some bricking. On the nose: subdued notes of dark fruit, currants, herbaceous, forest floor, worn leather, coffee grounds, slight menthol. Taste: smooth, slightly creamy, mouthcoating wine with black fruit, cedar, minerals, dark chocolate, earth, and a spiced graphite long finish with just a touch of heat. YUM! — 8 months ago

Petaluma

Hanlin Hill Riesling 2011

See previous notes for the 2011 vintage. Hints of kerosene and lime. On the palate M+ intensity and excellent persistence. The following night a more fulsome body with grapefruit and citrus. A great result for the difficult wet 2011 vintage in South Australia. A truly excellent mature Clare Valley Riesling. — 2 years ago

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018

@Ron R @Buddy G @Patrick Schultz thank you for all of your good advice! I picked this one for the region, per your advice. It was very earthy at first with lots of acidity. Tonight, it’s so very smooth with lots of fruit on the palate. I will continue to follow your advice and try some other ones. Cheers! — 4 years ago

Polish Hill Clare Valley Riesling 2013

Mid yellow in colour. Musky notes with a little talc - white and yellow flowers. On the palate lovely ripe peach flavours. Incredible flavour intensity. Irresistible. Low acid. Definitely one of Australia’s best dry Rieslings. No notes of TDN. Have the last one in a year or two. See previous Delectable note 6 years ago in June 2018 when it was carrying more citric acid. — 9 months ago

@Bob McDonald, yes it is. Gaia isn’t tho. It’s a real shame because there’s been a pull-back on Aussie wines in the U.S. Over 20 years ago, the market was flooded with Aussie wines, many sub par. Now Aussie wines occupy a small space on the shelves over here.

Walter Scott

Freedom Hill Vineyard Chardonnay 2021

This reminds me of a Kistler Dutton Ranch in the early 2000. Little less acidity but for sure that same delicious nose and bite on the tongue. Really delicious and I’m pretty sure someone in this app put me onto it. Forget who but thanks! — 9 months ago

J. Rochioli

Little Hill Pinot Noir 2008

2008 vintage. Had never come across the "Little Hill" until today. Light-medium body. Decanted and was fairly musty for 2-3 minutes before it started to blossom. Some blue fruit/menthol/eucalyptus throughout the experience. Demonstrative spice component on the back end. Could really only ding this on being slightly "watery" on the front palate. Otherwise, this is kicking now and has plenty of life and love to give. 5.27.23 — 2 years ago
