Veilles Vignes Santenay Chardonnay 2018

Interesting how this white from the south of the Cote de Beaune reminds me white Pernands in the northern part. Nose is mostly cracked limestone minerality and a light toastiness, underneath which is lightly-honeyed apple fruit and a squeeze of lemon oil. In the mouth it’s powerful and lean, with more emphasis on angular structure (forceful acids and even a lightly tannic feel) and less on fruit. Loads of minerality. Lip-smacking! — 10 months ago

Les Champgains Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2020

2024/9/2-3. There’s some young austerity, but with air the aromas really open, with salted lemon, stone, smoky minerals, flowers and judicious oak. In the palate it’s still quite tight, with ample acid and and austere structure - enjoyable but a bit gangly compared to what it will be at peak. Still, I understand Amiot has lengthened maturation times to near two years, and to me, those echoes of old school producers are very welcome — 8 months ago

Les Clos Chablis Grand Cru Chardonnay

Christian Moreau in 2020 has as an excellent stable led by Les Clos, with the Valmur close behind, and the Vaudésir picking up good points for favorite nose this morning. Today the Cuvée Guy Moreau was a delicious step up from the regular Vaillon. The 2017 Vaillon was ready and delicious. The 2018 Valmur stood out for its sheer intensity. Rating is for Les Clos. — 3 years ago
