Amazingly fresh and lively for such an old horse. The difference of storage at at winery. Would be great surprise as a blinded wine. Agree with previous notes. — 7 years ago
Hot damn I love aged Riesling. This one might have been a year or so past it’s tip top best but my friend who knows nada about wine tasted it and said “whoa this is a whole meal” which is to say it is wildly apple, honeysuckle, arugula and...feta cheese? So much feta we even got some out of the fridge to taste test. Loved this. Wish I had more. Love Riesling. Get in. — 7 years ago
This is just a fabulous QBA. I love everything Thanish, down to their base line Riesling. Not too much sugar, and the acid is on point. Lime zest and white peaches are the core, with a wet slate rock mineral dusting through out. The R.S. to the finish highlights all the citric flavors and makes you just want another refreshing sip. I think overall what makes this Riesling stand out is that it has clear defined layers and a clean finish, and delicate aromatics. 👌 — 9 years ago
At 8% alc. this gem is singing right now! Expressive, medium weight with a tangy dry finish. Fantastic! — 9 years ago
#2006 #Kasel #Nieschen #Riesling #Auslese #Goldkapsel--over the past year or so we've been opening numerous 2006s, remaining in our stocks, and we've been very pleased with their developments. The once-domineering #botrytis has become beautifully integrated, and they are showing a very attractive harmony between acidity and sweetness... the hallmark of any great, age-worthy #Riesling. The one aspect I found so beguiling with this 2006 was its subtle elegance and grace like a pretty ballarina. — 9 years ago
Very nice Riesling, perfect with my wings. Not particularly sweet any more, but it now has a clean Riesling flavor with a balanced acidity. Golden in color. Fresh fruit nose of white fruit. — 5 years ago
A good riesling that balances its sweetness with acid that cuts. There is also a distinct mineral texture. This wine screams for fried fish. — 8 years ago
What's the German for freakin' delicious? Honey, apricot, slate, and the smallest hint of that classic Riesling petrol. Easy smooth drinking, couldn't ask for anything more perfect for a May evening with some grilled mackerel on a porch in the Catskills (songbirds highly recommend accompaniment.) — 9 years ago
1959 Auslese for how much?! There is something truly unique and precious about a wine that has never left its place of origin... it's what some call provenance.
This now defunct #Rheingau estate was at this time on top of its game and produced some of the finest #Rieslings from #GrandCru vineyard sites in #Eltville and #Kiedrich. Eltviller #Kalbspflicht Riesling #Auslese from Jacob Fischer Erben was so fresh and lively that the closet guess was 1976!
Where else can you find such a phenomenal wine from an awesome year that is pushing 60 years of age for $250 in a restaurant???

The nose reveals, lighter more subtle petrol characteristics, ripe golden apple, ripe fleshy pineapple , apricots, marmalade, lemon syrup, grapefruit with pith, honey, beeswax, a little lime candy, white spice, dry stones, yellow lilies and spring flowers.
The body is thick, rich, waxy and a touch syrupy. Dry, pineapple & apricots, golden apple, peach, lemon syrup, lime candy, some green apple, grapefruit with pith, marmalade, orange rind, fruit blossoms, honey, beeswax, soft delicate minerality, very light petrol notes, slate, white spice with yellow lilies and spring flowers. Acidity is round and magnificent. The 09 is in a good place with plenty of life ahead. The rich, lush, well balanced finish is persistent for minutes.
Excellent with spicy Asian food.
Photos of, the view across the river from their Weingut and their Bernkasteler Doctor Vineyard, the blue slate this wine grows in, Sofia Thanisch finishing up with a group before our one on one tasting and the view of Bernkasteler Doctor Vineyard from the other side looking down at the river. — 7 years ago
Exceptional. Normally I wouldn't be so bowled over by a Riesling this sweet. But the 18 years draw a nice hardened mineral edge to this wine without dulling any of the sweet pear notes. — 8 years ago
Light gold color, with nose of golden apple, marmalade, orange blossom. On the palate it takes on a Chenin- like texture, with kafir lime, tart nectarine, white flowers, and a little burgundy-esque presence, with peach undertones. Young but very good. — 9 years ago
A little sweet as the acid has faded with age. — 9 years ago
Aravind A
These just keep getting better. On the nose: peach, lime flower, a suggestion of petrol, this has such a wonderful nose, but then on the palate, it steps up a notch: fantastic acidity, great salinity, lime, herbs, so sweet and savory at the same time. And 8% abv...this is disappearing too fast. Glad I have one more. — 5 years ago
