Clonakilla

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2003

The Canberra district's best red wine. Opulent with a heady perfume of raspberries and cassis. A smooth palate with dark plum, cherry and berry flavours. Tim Kirk is an impressive winemaker. — 6 years ago

Murphy-Goode

North Coast Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Over 30 years ago, Tim Murphy, Dale Goode and Dave Ready founded their three-family partnership in 1985 & launched the brand with two wines: estate grown Fumé Blanc and Chardonnay. Crisp aromas of citrus fruits, Blend of 96% Sauvignon Blanc & 4% Semillon. Palate crisp fresh furry fruit flavors with some peach & melon. Medium finish, lively acidity ending with citrus tones. Nice value. — 6 years ago

Schäfer-Fröhlich

Felseneck GG Riesling 2023

85$/12.5%. Sadly 85$. I met Tim Fröhlich (aka Tim ‘Cheerful’) ca. 15 years??? ago at ‘La République’ in LA - now a restaurant - in what used to be the house of Charlie Chaplin. It was a major Riesling tasting with the late Rudi Wiest. Anyways ever since I have been a mega fan. White peach, white flowers on the nose. Smokey and wild in the glass. Yeasty. Hint sweetness nicely balanced with acidity. Stonefruit, white peach, yellow peach, hint sour mandarine, elderberry. Incredible minerality - bursting with freshness and vitality and Fröhlichness - its good to be alive! — 5 months ago

Clonakilla

Canberra District Riesling 2013

See previous Delectable notes - white florals with Pyrazines (kerosene/petrol) starting to develop. Also toast and honey starting to develop. Tim Kirk the winemaker said this could go for 15 years in the cellar. Will probably have my last bottle in 2023 when 10 years old. Had my last bottle on 18th August and it was sublime. Absolutely worth the patience to cellar it for 11 years. More fulsome with less citric acid as it aged. More mandarin and a little white peach. Not a hint of petrol/kerosene. — 4 years ago

Fratelli Monchiero

Barolo Nebbiolo 1985

This bottle was the third part of a really fun ensemble of Barolos, generously shared and curated by our friend Tim.

Once again, served blind after a lengthy slow-ox; all the while knowing we were drinking Barolo but that’s it. This bottle had rather obvious signs of age with loads of sediment (though most was decanted off) and a rather pronounced orange rim. On the nose, there was tar for dayzzzz! Secondary characteristics were dominant with dried cherries, balsamico, earth, and truffles. The finish was savory and delicious.

I was sure this was old but I wasn’t sure how old. Revealed as a 1985 Fratelli Monchiero, a producer I was unfamiliar with. Our host mentioned that it came across DOA when the cork was pulled but his experience with old Barolo proved this had a chance to come around; I’m so grateful he showed the patience necessary. A lovely experience.

Balcones Distillery

Baby Blue Corn Whiskey

Unique whisky made from Atole, roasted blue corn meal. Smooth finish, slight nuttiness, best to be paired with delicious Texas BBQ, or California cuisine. (Or just fine on its own). Thanks @Amanda Thomas and @Tim Schroeder always a nice treat from TX — 7 years ago

Domaine du Collier

Saumur Blanc Chenin Blanc 2009

Popped and poured, consumed over several hours. Initially served chilled and then allowed to come up to room temperature. It should be noted that this was lovely from the first pour but improved with air and as it warmed. The 2009 Domaine du Collier Saumer Blanc pours a bright golden color, with no signs of sediment or gas. High viscosity. On the nose, this is extremely floral…like being in a grove of magnolia trees in full bloom. The flowers are accompanied by bright citrus fruit, lanolin, alfalfa and honey. On the palate, the wine is dry with high acid. The notes from the bouquet are confirmed and accompanied by the most lovely, almost oily texture. This is oh so woolly! The finish goes long. This is my first experience with Antoine’s wine and I’m now absolutely smitten (thanks Tim). A simply gorgeous example of Chenin from a warm vintage and an alternative to Joly if you crave a natural touch…but not too natural. This is a banger now and will continue to be so for some time. Wow.

Ravensworth

Canberra District Shiraz Viognier 2015

Ravensworth is the private venture of Bryan Martin who is the winemaker together with Tim Kirk, at the nearby and famous Clonakilla - arguably the benchmark for Shiraz Viognier in Australia. Wonderful spicy scents together with a floral note from the Viognier. Medium weight with meaty, savoury spicy flavours on the palate. My kind of Shiraz blend and in the frame of Clonakilla with better QPR. — 5 years ago

Penfolds

Grange South Australia Shiraz 1990

Peter Marks
9.8

At first the nose is cedary and earthy and pencil lead. Then it quickly opens up to display an array of blueberry, black currant and sweet plum. Amazingly alive for a wine of this age and can still go another 10 years. Alluring, long finish of leather, sweet spice and smoky oak. Thank you Tim Matz for the taste! — 8 years ago
