Château Lynch-Bages

Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 1999

A classic Lynch Bages at its peak, ready to drink. Cedar, old leather, light eucalyptus on the nose at the outset... surprising alcohol/ tannin forward upon opening... but that gives way shortly to emerging ripe dark cherry, leather, just a bit of spice and cedar notes. Open an hour, the palate becomes even softer and more integrated... the wine never fades. Loved it. A beautiful Bordeaux. — 5 years ago

Château Latour

Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1940

What a beautiful person inside and out! I'm blessed beyond measure to be able to call him "Dad". Words can't adequately express how much I Love him. We opened a few bottles last night that I will hold near and dear to my heart forever. We are celebrating his completion of 6 rounds of chemo therapy in his battle against Prostate cancer. This is his 3rd time in the ring against this opponent and it appears that he's won with a unanimous decision by knockout at this time!!!!!! Love you dad!!!!! So proud of your strength through this process. My Father was born in 1940. A difficult year to say the least:
Germans entered Bordeaux in June of 1940. As dictated by Hitler himself, it was the sworn duty of each and every commander to search and seize whatever could be used for the advancement of the German cause. Bedlam broke out. Chateaux' were ransacked, wine cellars were looted if not used for target practice. The Chateauxs were forced to continue producing wines. It's poetic justice that Mother Nature provided the Germans with the worst growing season from 1940 to 1944!!!! The Germans left Bordeaux in 1944 to the cheers of the residents "Au Revoir Les Allemands"!!!! The 1940 bottle that we enjoyed this evening survived World War II. It Survived the ransacking, pillaging & plunder of countless German soldiers. It's outer capsule showed evident signs of its struggle but it's inner beauty was unblemished and glorious. I've had many, many vintages of Latour from 1928 and on but none have ever tasted as perfect as the one we enjoyed tonight. This 1940 was perfect. It was a fighter, it never gave up, it never relinquished in the face of adversity. That's my Father, that my role model. He's a beautiful person inside & out. I think 1940 is the best vintage that I have ever had the privilege to enjoy. Special thanks to my good friends Michael Troise whom provided me with much of the insights in regards to the incredibly difficult vintage and David Page whom gifted this bottle to me for our celebration this evening. I will never forget your generosity. It was a glorious evening to say the least!!! Wine has a way of bringing people together and encapsulating an evening and event. I couldn't think of a better way to rejoice in his victory than to open a Father & Son birth year wine.

After 2 hour decant still kind of smelled like a bag of balloons. Put it back in the bottle and on day 2 it's singing. Woodsy black cherry, black tea, baking spices and some of that classic tar thing. — 8 years ago

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

You obviously know what you're getting into with this one - tannin, tannin, and more tannin. Amazing structure, nice acid, if you're in the mood for one of the Napa big boys this isn't a bad way to do it. — 9 years ago

Quick weekend getaway for the TCU vs Arkansas football game! Always a treat to come up to Fayetteville in the Ozark mountains! I'm a Razorback by marriage, even though I grew up near TCU. A wonderful and beautiful campus and amazing football atmosphere.

Doe's Eat Place is a staple in Fayetteville. Picnic table tops, right off Dixon strip, fat steaks, and an actually decent wine list that is served in red plastic cups unless you buy by the bottle 😂. I've been pleasantly surprised with Stag's Leap over the last few years in regards to their quality...seems to be stepping up a bit/getting back to their roots. This Artemis won't hold forever, but it has a super aromatic nose of blue and black fruits, dates and french bread. Very plush on the palate, and a lengthy finish of licorice, touch of menthol and lots of blueberries and vanilla. Crowd pleaser.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 1926

Label was very very new looking. Questionable as to real or not. Cork is correct. Wine us correct. On the way out but just won't leave. Brown to rust color. Better as it went on. Light fruit. Amazingly long Finish. Wow. — 8 years ago

Maturing, and more restrained these days. The oak, while still present, is integrating, and there's more earth and leather and less boisterous fruit. A touch volatile, but in an engaging way. Pretty nice. — 8 years ago

Opus One

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Color me impressed, the nose on the 2012 Opus One was simply stunning. Fresh floral tones of violet and lavender gave way to ripe dark-red fruits and subtle hints of baking spice. It enveloped the senses with silky textures which seem to come in vibrant waves, carrying crushed berry and black currant. It finished back on a floral note, which was offset by cherry pit and hints of sweet spice. The best part, is that it should only get better with age. — 9 years ago

Olga Raffault

Les Picasses Chinon Cabernet Franc 2006

look: pale ruby red core with slightly garnet rim.  medium viscosity.

smell: medium intensity aromas of roasted red bell pepper, allepo pepper flake, raspberry sauce, roasted jalapeno.  overall, sweet and ripe fruit smells followed by slight iron-like gravel note.

taste: medium + acidity, nearly high acidity, medium - tannin, flavors of smoked tomato, sour cherry, ending with a note of sweet dried/roasted pepper.

profile: flavor is 'bursty' and drops out quickly and then hangs in a very subtle low way on the palate.
purchased with Somm Select. honestly, it could have cellared a few more years.

Visually, bricking has begun. The nose presented a hint of musty cardboard, at that point, my sphincter started twitching - had I left this too long?
Palate displays spice notes initially, followed by anise, cinnamon and cloves. Mature cherries are also in the foreground with moderate tannins. Finishes with leather, olives notes and moderate sweetness. This is perched on a plateau, and should be consumed now.
The story behind the label is a broken bottle of a 2003 Leoville Las Cases, which pissed it’s pants (so to speak) in my eurocave, back in the day...

Such beauty and elegance. I'm sure some of it is the age, but an AOC known for power emitting such elegance...Wow. Anyhow, jammy raspberries and a whole garden of vegetables on the nose. Palate is quite refined with white pepper, rock and all the trademark CDP flavors. Im never a huge fan of that fruit in the front, but the mid and back arr gorgeous. What's truly remarkable is the balance...The ability to isolate any single flavor to ruminate on, how each nuance to perfectly morphs into the next. Still some pronounced tannin in this guy! — 7 years ago

Comtes de Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne Chardonnay 2004

I kept coming back to this wine. Usually stands out in a lineup like this because it's a BDB, but tonight it fits right in and is drinking beautifully. The best Comtes I've had to date, I need to find some of these with more age. — 8 years ago

Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhône Blend

This wine needed about 3 hours to release. Initially tight with uncomfortable medicinal nose which then totally dissipated. Drinking now next day and you get the age of fully integrated but not fading tannins. Nose has a delightful dark fruit and smokiness. Great fit of nose and taste, meaning - when tastes after smelling the experience is consistent and not jolting. I think the color purple in a subdued way. Very nice. Memo to self: decant and watch for sediment, and enjoy three hours later. — 8 years ago
