Palmina

Los Olivos District Vermentino 2021

This wine has a light yellow-gold tint. The nose is a bit muted, but showy enough to offer some nice lemon, apricot and salinity notes. The salinity comes across clearly on the palate, and so does the lemon. Most noteworthy is the very fresh acidity. The ocean influence is strong here, and you should pair this wine with crustaceans. The citrus minerality hangs around for quite awhile after the sip. — a month ago

Boogie Nights Larner Vineyard Malvasia Bianca 2019

Great example of a New World malvasia. Outpaces what Steve Clifton at Palmina does with this varietal in terms of depth and length (chalk that up to winemaker’s preference). No idea about how well it might age, but I wouldn’t bother waiting! — 4 years ago

Rocca Santa Barbara County Nebbiolo 2012

One of the great things about Palmina is that they pull stuff from their cellar from time to time and offer them as part of wine club shipments. This took about 20-30min to open up (had some funky aromas initially which eventually blew off), but once it did it showed some great, older aromas of dried strawberries, hints of sour cherry, and old leather. Great acidity on the palate...and it went great with the AMAZING pork fried rice dish that Vanessa made us for dinner! — 4 years ago

Undici Santa Ynez Valley Sangiovese 2009

Showing its age, but hanging in there. Big cherry, licorice, slight celery, earth, dates and nice acid. Great with lasagna. — 7 months ago

La Voix Here And Heaven 2016

Wow. Totally surprised by this wine. As I understand it, La Voix is an offshoot from Steve’s flagship operation, Palmina (the best Italian varietal-based wines outside of the Old Country, IMHO). I was a bit skeptical at first - was concerned about it being over-oaked like the one vintage of John Alban’s Perra Docs North offerings that I’ve had - but this is terrific (and an amazing QPR). Definitely has an old-world flare to it in terms of acidity and minerality (more Chablis than Burgundy), but with CA fruit through and through. Do yourself a favor and try one of these! — 4 years ago
