2020 PNV Block 4: Staglin Clone Puncheon Fermented & Aged Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

MICHAEL COOPER DipWSET
9.5

One of my favorites from Premiere Napa Valley 2020. #pnv20 #pnv2020 #napa Only 5 cases. Staglin clonal selection of Cabernet Sauvignon
A second generation Martha’s Clone, originally planted on the estate in the 1960s by André Tchelistcheff
Single barrel selected by winemaker Fredrik Johansson as a roto fermentation and aging in the same barrel
Your wine showcases opulence, elegance, nuance and complexity

This is the first time we are creating single barrel selection of the Staglin Clone Cabernet Sauvignon for Premiere Napa Valley. Harvested on Oct. 26, 2018 from our Rutherford Bench estate vines that were originally planted in the 1960s by the famed Andre Tchelistcheff and repropagated in 1990 under the talented hand of David Abreu. Winemaker Fredrik Johnasson selected these grapes for an in-barrel roto fermentation where the wine currently ages awaiting its future owner. One of the greatest vintages we have seen on our estate, this wine showcases the opulence, elegance, nuance and complexity our Cabernet Sauvignon has become known for.

Aalto

P.S. (Pagos Seleccionados) Ribera del Duero Tinto Fino 2017

Modern take on Ribera del Duero from select vineyards. The color is deep purple, indicative of the 60+ year old vine grape selection. An expressive nose with scents of black fruits, tobacco and leather. The mouthfeel is equally expressive with cherry, blackberry, oak, vanilla, and licorice. The tannings are soft for such a young Tempranillo, and it is not slander but quite the contrary, it allows for the elegant finish with finesse and length. Very exiting wine!

PS The mastermind/winemaker behind Aalto made his mark at Vega Sicilia for over 30 years. It is no surprise the wine is excellent; it will be exciting to see how the wine evolves over the next decade and how it will challenge some of the greatest wines produced in the region.

Heitz Cellar

Lot C-91 Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

MICHAEL COOPER DipWSET
9.4

One of my favorite lots from the 2020 #pnv #pnv20 #pnv2020 only 5 cases produced. A small blended selection of our finest Cabernet Sauvignon for Premiere Napa Valley
100% Cabernet Sauvignon from our top sites in the Howell Mountain, Oakville, Rutherford and St. Helena nested appellations
Aging in oak tanks for one year, new French Limousin oak barrels for three years, and then one year in bottle

When the Lawrence family acquired Heitz Cellar in April 2018, they discovered a single dusty bottle in the wine library; a bottle of 1969 Lot C-91 Cabernet Sauvignon. After researching, we discovered wine collectors around the world had a few rare bottles in their cellar as well. Upon learning its origin and Joe Heitz’s inspiration for this singular bottling 50 years prior, we knew that it was time to rekindle the essence of this remarkable cuvée. In order to express the very best of Napa Valley, our winemaker began blending trials of our single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons in barrel, kept separate throughout their élevage. Sampling from barrels of our Oakville, Rutherford, Howell Mountain and St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon, Brittany Sherwood found the perfect marriage of these outstanding standalone wines. After blending, the wine continues to age in 100 percent new, French Limousin oak barrels for three years, followed by aging in bottle for an additional year. With the breadth of estate terroir that Heitz Cellar is fortunate to cultivate, we are able to create the quintessential Cabernet Sauvignon that embodies the elegance, ruggedness, refinement and balance that is uniquely Napa Valley.

Domaine Parent

Selection Pomone Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2017

Attended a virtual tasting with Anne Parent, winemaker for Domaine Parent. The Domaine started making wine back in the 17th century. Many thanks to my good friend @Mike R for setting it all up.

What makes this wine special (aside from the fact that it’s only produced in special years) is the fact that it’s not a typical Bourgogne...70% of this wine comes from the Village of Pommard (70+yr old vines) and 30% of this wine comes from premiers crus vineyards. Clearly a step up from most producers typical Bourgogne, which is a massive amalgamation of fruit. A true testament to Domaine Parent and the threshold for quality.

30min decant and then followed it over the next two hours. Beautiful out of the gate, with so much floral and spice aromatics. Potpourri, spiced rhubarb, dried cranberries, fleshy black cherries, black tea herbal nuances and a brief sweet note of brown sugar. Fairly mellow and plush on the palate with classic underbrush, typical Pommard dried red and black fruits, and a tart, energetic and delicious finish. Nothing thin or overly herbal here. Like a Rivers-Marie Sonoma Coast with more restraint. Wonderful QPR.

Dirty & Rowdy

Enz Vineyard Mourvèdre

Super fun tasting through a selection of Dirty and Rowdy’s. While there wasn’t a bad bottle in this lineup, the 2017 Enz was lights out... Was a treat having the winemaker Hardy Wallace join us via Zoom. What we expected to be a 30min or so zoom call to walk us through the lineup turned into 2 hours of learning about the various vineyards Hardy works with and diving into his philosophy on wine. An afternoon I’ll never forget! Thanks Clare for making this happen! — 3 years ago

Dão Selecao do Enologo Red Blend 2016

Mine is Winemaker Selection Red Blend. My last trip was to Portugal and this is taking me back. Smells ancient, then tastes surprising light but still ancient. Flavour is poppin. Love this so much. Can’t wait to have with BBQ tonight. — 4 years ago

Wente Vineyards

Winemaker Selection Small Lot Meritage Blend 2015

This is another wine we are drinking in the pandemic quarantine of 2020. I love it! Vary dark in the glass... almost opaque. It smells good, dark boysenberry with a suggestion of earth wood and a bit of spice and chocolate. It rolls on the tongue like velvet, so smooth. Pleasant medium length finish. Nice nice! — 4 years ago
