Very different from our prior bottle. While the nose is consistent with citrus fruits like grapefruit and lemon peel, the palate displays tension, driven by high acidity. Not enjoying this tonight, actually. I’m now desperately in search of fud. Hopefully, this will turn the corner with air. — 5 years ago

Freaking well made wine. You can drink it standing up. Don’t need to plan a meal around it, yet regal as well. It’s dumb to make comparisons but with such few words I suppose it makes sense: ferren, dumol, bevan? Loads of citrus, ultra pure, well defined, powerful. I guess I like this. Bought at the tasting room (they kind of hurried us along) but I could still get a sense of what these wines are. The chards and the pinots aren’t just fluff, they are really really good wines. Not so much into the sales model but for the price you’ll compete with stuff double the price — 5 years ago
Absolutely delicious. WON. Juicy with racy acidity. Hopefully this style will come to represent the future of pinot noir from the west Sonoma Coast. Last night tasted with Aubert UV-SL and Ferren Silver eagle also from 2017. Stylistically, the heavier higher alcohol Aubert and the Ceritas couldn't be more different with the Ferren somewhere in the middle. The group was split between the Ferren and Ceritas as the favorite but all agreed that all the wines were excellent. — 6 years ago
An Xmas gift from a close friend @Bill Bender - thank you so much, Bill.
The nose is bright and boisterous, which oozes red currants and cinnamon. On the palate, this presents just like a contemporary burg. Light on its feet. Soft, round tannins with a lovely interplay of relaxed acid. Finishes with delicacy and elegance.
We are really looking forward to securing a 2019 allocation from the winery. — 8 years ago
2009 Sea Smoke "One Barrel" Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
From the winery: "Each year we select the best barrel of our estate-grown Pinot Noir; every bottle of ‘One Barrel’ produced is from that single, special barrel. It is a unique combination of vintage, vineyard location, Pinot Noir clone and barrel cooper —never to be repeated. Two hundred and eighty prized bottles, from One Barrel."
A friend opened this wine for me. I had tasted Sea Smoke Pinot before, mostly “Ten”’s I think, but I had never even heard of this one. I believe it’s offered only to certain members of the mailing list, and then only one bottle at that. Nose is dominated by notes of eucalyptus and menthol with some fresh herbs tossed in for good measure. Pleasant enough palate of black cherry and cola. Decent finish. Not bad, but I can think of better Pinot to acquire for $150 a bottle (Marcassin, CIRQ and Boar’s View come to mind), and several that I would consider better for half that price (see Ferren and Kosta Browne for example). A well made wine. Simply not worth the price of admission for me.

This 2017 is less opulent, more compact, and tightly coiled compared to the 2016. Because of that, I followed this wine over two days.
On day one, this was tart and tangy…almost steely and too powerful. Day two saw this blossom and expand on the palate. The tart/tangy vibe is still there but it’s accompanied by a deep richness. Everything about this Chardonnay is lemon driven…lemon oil, lemon scone, powdered lemon tart bar, especially on the nose. There is a nervy vein of acidity at the core carrying notes of pineapple and white peach, but never pushed too far to the ripe side. One of those wines that retains freshness with the richness. If popping now, decant 1-2hrs or hold another few years, and enjoy the 2016 before opening this 2017! — 5 years ago
17’ Arista Perli Vineyards Chardonnay. One of only 18 vineyards on top of an AVA that was just created in 1997. Decanted for an hour. Medium gold in color. Bright pear & stone fruits, spices on the nose. “Sells it”. Pear, yellow apple, honey, pinenuts, moderate acidity/oak. with lively texture flowing through the finish. Unlike Matts Ferren Wines, these aren’t as big in the shoulders. Beautifully balanced Chardonnay. Worth checking out the entire Chardonnay line up since 2016’s. Cheers. Edit- This wine will taste even better in 2021+ — 6 years ago

Aubert? Only this one.14’ Arista UV-EL Diablo Vineyard Chardonnay. Old world!?! Burgundian style!?! Needs another year or more!!
Rich & layered. White flowers, white peach, fig, minerality. Light on its feet. Very well-made Chardonnay.
Matt Courtney winemaker, somebody I enjoy following. Matt started up Ferren wines a few years back. EDIT- Your worst fears... last glass was better then the first. WAIT until 2020/21.
