2018 vintage. Umm...yeah..about this wine...showstopping and seductive. Both big and supple. Deluxe plushy. Tannins relegated to future considerations. Supposedly 90% Grenache and difficult to fathom given both the intensity of dark color and the softness in said dark color. Wouldn't trot this out for someone's first big CDP as representative of the appellation but as a finisher in a lineup of 10+ CDP's? Absolutely. This is one of those wines that leads to an (unhealthy) obsession. Burn after reading and you never saw this. — a year ago

This was a transcendent Riesling experience. The best Merkelbach I've ever had, and it's still so young. The best description I can fathom is the ripest kiwi ever with a sprinkle of sea salt and the pure essence of red slate. The characteristic spice is definitely there but hiding in the background for now. The utter depth, concentration, extract, and searing acidity make it unforgettable. — 7 years ago

Can’t fathom why this doesn’t get better ratings. Super intense, but completely drinkable. Perfect for red meats and strong flavored cheese. Love it! Are there other wines from this region, Emporda, that are even better? — 6 years ago

Speechless....I have been lucky enough to share this wine with friends twice. Both times I have been blown away. It is fresh, concentrated, but elegant. I cannot fathom that it is 30 years old. It will age for another 20-30 years easily. It is a force of nature yet it has balance and grace. Rocks/minerality with a sweetness of currants, dark fruit, chocolate, smoked meats, and perfect bacon fat. — 5 years ago

This has been relaunched as an IPA. Very clean and drinkable at 6.0% ABV. As close to a “session” IPA as I’m interested in. Pure grapefruit peel with a nice bitter finish. — 6 years ago

2008 Sine Qua Non "Jinete Bajo Vin de Paille" California Roussanne (375ml). A sweet wine named after E’s favorite horse. Beautiful, fathom-deep gold color. Apricots and orange marmalade on the nose. Unctuous, syrupy, creamy texture with notes of candied citrus and creme brûlée. Monstrous 240 grams per liter of residual sugar with perfectly balanced acidity. Manfred really is the master of these high wire balancing acts. Is there anything that this guy doesn’t excel at? Simply spectacular. A beautiful dessert wine that is itself a dessert. — 7 years ago
