Chorey-les-Beaune Chardonnay

Excellent example of Burgundian Chardonnay. Floral, apples, lemon, some flint, and excellent minerality with balanced oak underneath exhibiting a bit of butter and vanilla. Full on the palate, but excellent acidity. And this is their village wine! — 8 years ago

Great balance here. Concentrated cheery, black currant and forest on the nose. Finish is quite short, but fun and playful. Definitely needs more cellar time, will check back in a couple of years. — 10 years ago

La Petite Chapelle Hermitage Syrah 2013

2013 vintage. The second wine of La Chapelle, that is now named " Maison Bleue", but an excellent wine in its own right. At 9 years old this is absolutely gorgeous with an expressive nose of blackberries, wild flowers, pepper and leather, enhanced by a subtle smokiness. In the mouth it combines power with elegance, with pure fruit, subtle spices, silky tannins and great length. Terrific value if the mythical La Chappelle doesn't fit your budget. Abv. 13,5% — 3 years ago

"Grand Pré" Fleurie Gamay 2015

A nice Beaujolais from a vintage that I don’t usually love compared to 2014/2016. Definitely better with an hour or so in a decanter to let the tannins integrate a bit more. Dark purple in the glass - darker than expected. Nice cherry aromas. Still could resolve a bit more on the finish but with a slight chill is nice. — 6 years ago

Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils

Clos de la Chapelle Volnay 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2008

Deep, heady, dizzying nose of strawberry compote, cherry liquer, sandalwood, maybe some eucalyptus, and other exotic woods.
palate also brings damp earth, light rose , and a slight sanguine note. More muscular Than I would have expected out of a volnay. But at the same time precise and fresh with energizing acidity creating a nervy tension. Sensational

I should mention that it needed considerable time. Started off very floral and strawberry but somewhat one dimensional. Several hours later was a different wine

Domaine Lafouge (Jean et Gilles Lafouge)

La Chapelle Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2012

This is a silkier, more elegant vintage of the Chapelle, at least relative to the 2010, which was really in my zone, as well as the 2009, which I found over-the-top, but in both cases I think there was more stuffing there than here. This would've shown better if I'd opened it with white meat or even fish or something else where a lightweight presence and loose-knit structure is called for. It's an excellent wine in that idiom but lacks some of the solidity and grip it has offered in other years. It's not imbalanced at all, and the trademark stony mineral flavors are still here, it's just a slimmer version of its usual self. — 10 years ago
