Château Brun Despagne

Domaine des Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun)

Morgon Gamay 2022

Always well made and always a great value. Nose needs some air to coax it out. But then there’s gorgeously pure black cherry and crushed stone powder. Mouthfilling flavors of dark, ripe fruit and minerality. Fairly long finish. Seems very tight, and there’s good acidity and some noticeable tannin, so this looks like a sure bet for improvement over the next few years at least. 9.1 for now but I’m pretty sure there’s upside. — a day ago

@Tom Casagrande, I adore Jean-Paul Brun, tasted in his cellars in Charnay a few times, and met him at multiple trade tastings in SF that his buddy Eric Texier used to get us into (Eric’s cellars are 5-7 minutes away from J-P). Since he strives for a Burgundian-style, his wines always seem to show great acidity and a capacity to go 5 to 10 years in the cellar.

Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Pinot Noir 2022

Light garnet color with a small ruby core. Aromas of wet soil, red berries and dried rose petals. Flavors of raspberries, red currants, mushrooms and savory spices. Long lasting finish. Gripping acidity with very silky tannins. Light bodied and quite savory but still full of finesse. Needs a bit of aeration to fully open up. Solid value and nice mid-week option. Thanks for the bottle, Kase. — 6 months ago

Fleurie Gamay 2017

Picked this up a few months ago from the state store when I saw Louis Dressner. Seems different from the only other fleurie I’ve had. Lots of earth juice with raspberry. — 6 years ago

Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2009

The nose is different. Much more woodsy and less fruit than I’d have imagined. The flavour profile was blackberry based and again, some wood. Some eucalyptus and green grass. Also some wet soil and cloves. The tannins weren’t a punch in the face by any means, but also haven’t haven’t completely softened as you might expect in a ten year-old. The palate was uninspiring as there was a watery-ness in the mid palate. I’m not sure whether this is over the hill or just not quite there yet and in a dumb phase? Will wait and see for the final two bottles. Solid, I guess. Not yet amazing. — 7 years ago

Petit Ours Brun Côtes du Rhône Syrah

Nose - lilacs, soil, clay amphora and erasers! (Haha) Flavors - cranberry and tart blueberries. Mouthfeel - a bit sharp and acidic with a semi dry finish some tannins but not too much. Look - gorgeous garnet color. Food - went sooo very well with the lamb my hubs made. — 4 months ago

Garnet in color. Intense aroma of red licorice, cranberry, dried cherries, and smoke. Incredible earthy palate that tastes of campfire and unsweetened chocolate. It finishes with very mild tannins and long lingering flavor of earth , like autumn leaves on a forest floor. — 6 years ago
