Arénes Sauvages Cornas Syrah 2020

Popped and double decanted to remove sediment (there’s quite a bit). Deeply fruity nose. Loads of dark berries, with deep cracked stone minerals. A bit of cured meat. The palate is much more savory than the nose. Liquid rock leads, but some crisp, dark berry fruit. Surprisingly nice acids. A fair amount of soft tannin. Long, clingy finish. Drinking very nicely now. Might be solid for a few more years, though I’m not sure it will improve much from here. Another really good wine from this top notch co-op. — 6 days ago

Les Hauts du Fief Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2020

Truncated family party notes. So solid and typical and satisfying. As always. This Crozes is such a great value. Drink up. — 6 months ago

Noble Rives Hermitage Syrah 2020

Darn solid for $37 at WTSO. An open, friendly style, the nose leads with dark berry ooze, coffee grounds, low-toned stony minerals, toasted baking spices. Rich and soft in the mouth, it’s got lots of dark, clingy fruit and dark earth notes, with a saline echo. Tannins are rich but buried in the voluptuous texture. Pretty decent acids. Not super complex nor an ager, this will be fun to drink with daubes (what I have on the stove) and the like over the next few years. — 9 months ago

Gambert de Loche Hermitage Syrah 2010

Tough Hermitage competition last night and it ranked slightly behind top producers JL Chave and Jaboulet (La Chapelle). Not quite as long and explosive, but who’s to complain — 2 years ago

Crushed ripe cherry, bacon & fat, crushed Hemlock needles, granite, damp compost, slight barnyard; Ripe black cherry, dried blackberry, black currant, red pepper skin. Tannins persist. Drink 2025-32+

Much brighter on both nose/palate than my other Hermitage experiences. Perhaps I prefer the dried fruit/leather notes showing with more age...

Paired to lamb schnitzel, just wonderful together.

You’re an inspiration! I hope to have a cellar as deep as yours someday. My knees for your ‘88’s!

@Severn Goodwin , I used to have 1982/1983 and 1985 Guigal Hermitage (as well as the regular Cote Rotie from those years), all really fine and criminally underrated, IMHO!!
