Sometimes you just need a #volcanicwine. This one comes from the craggy, windswept Canary Islands of the northwest coast of Africa. Put on some Cesaria Évora and get ready for a whiff of smoky funk followed by deeply mineral flavors of plum and red berries, bitter herbs, and pulverized stone. Faint powdery tannins hang in a haze as the wine lingers with bitter licorice root and camphor wood notes in the finish. Made from old vines of Listan Negro, it’s a classical expression of the Canaries, but from a surprising source. Huge amount of Aroma here... Bacon fat sizzling in an iron skillet covered from the elements by an old, lighting struck barn.

Black pepper, Maui Xmas pepper berry, cherry skin, plum skin, dried alpine berries. Flint, sea derived saline.
Finishing with tangerine like acidity, pine resin and vegetal garden stalk

There really is something about island wines. We seem to have an affinity to them all—Madeira, Corsica, Sicily...and here we with are with Canary sack. Red, actually, with terrific poise, balance, and expression of terroir. Double decanted and enjoyed on the second day. Funky nose, with some sweet fruit mixed in. Peppery palate, wet stone, easy fruit, and great acidity. Another winner. — 6 years ago
