Cascina delle Rose

A Elizabeth Dolcetto d'Alba 2016

If for some strange reason you’re not feeling like Barbera, this is quite good with salumi - especially on days 2 and 3. — 6 years ago

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2001

Nose: Big and huge aroma of saffron, dried gooey white fig, honeyed vanilla, and some strange notes of new plastic.
Palate: What was found on the nose seems to come through on the palate. Sweet finish that has no end.

Fattorie Romeo Del Castello

Allegracore Etna Rosso DOC Nerello Mascalese-Nerello Cappuccio Blend 2014

Strange for an Etna Rosso, but delicious. Don't get nearly the volcanic minerality that I'd expect, but do get some red fruit and some gamay-like funk. — 7 years ago

Château Saint-Pierre

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

An old love, unfortunately strange bottle, still enjoyable after 1h. — 8 years ago

R. López de Heredia

Viña Cubillo Crianza Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2002

I've had a lot of bottles of Lopez de Heredia and for some strange reason this inexpensive Cubillo from a weak vintage might be my favorite. Maybe it was the state of my palate that night, or the setting or the food. But to me, this bottle was really about the wondrous unpredictability of wine, and the importance of a good winemaker, especially when conditions are not ideal. (From September 2012) — 9 years ago

"Le Souvenir" Sierra Madre Vineyard Chardonnay 2011

Is in a weird phase from having just tried it a few months ago...rich apple fruit has given way to tart citrus, and showing more vanilla than before...strange? — 10 years ago

Castello di Bolgheri

Bolgheri Superiore SuperTuscan Blend 2013

A strange but endearing whiff of barnyard leads to an elegant, feminine and silky Bolgheri. Questionable PV but undoubtedly nice. — 6 years ago

Cellers Baronia del Montsant (Clos d'Englora)

Englora Montsant Grenache Blend 2008

Crazy nose with herbs, spices and fruit skins. Flavors are softer and less rich, but funky fun. A strange but lovely thing. — 6 years ago

Michel Arnould & Fils

Mémoire de Vignes Champagne Pinot Noir 2011

Gary Westby
9.6

Patrick Arnould passed over 2009 & 2010, but decided to make this 2011- a strange decision on paper. This all old-vine Pinot blanc de noir has it where it counts- in the bottle. Only 60 bottles for the USA, now 59. This seems lighter than past vintages, but still has that Nutella like hazelnut character that screams Verzenay. I will wait a year or two to have my next bottle for sure... But this long wine sure did go down easy last night! — 7 years ago

Serafin Père et Fils

Vieilles Vignes Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir 2008

Morgan Harris
9.4

Hits well above its weight. Lots of purity of fruit (all red), which is just starting to get slightly desiccated around the edges. Lots of porcini powder and meaty elements which I think are Brett-derivative. None of the thinness usually associated with the vintage either. Little to no wood-influence, and if it's there, deftly integrated. Strange we don't see more of these wines on lists or in stores if this is generally indicative of the domain's quality. — 9 years ago

It is indicative of Serafin's quality, IMO. An address that's overlooked as everyone is fixated on the same handful of producers.

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 1996

Very interesting nose. French barnyard smell, tough to describe. Capsicum - red fruits. Colour more earthy then 86. Leathery, showing some secondary characters. Long polished finish. Flavours carry on but I actually thought this was older then the 86. Strange? 94-95 points. — 9 years ago

Narin Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2012

Holly Orchard
8.9

Pleasantly surprised, but it definitely needed the right food. It was great with a gnocchi in Parmesan and Gorgonzola sauce. The bright acid cut through the rich cream sauce. Some roasted lamb brought out the herbaceous notes, and once again the lighter body and acid helped to balance the rich dish. It was strange that it paired horribly with a carbonara dish- something about the prosciutto made it musty tasting. I think the key to the enjoyment of this wine is the food pairing, so pair wisely! — 6 years ago

Heitz Cellar

Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Heitz has still got it baby, 1998 Napa cab standing up nicely at 18 years old. The color is only just showing signs of age. The nose is full of mint and lamb. In a strange spot since its not especially lush or fruity and yet hasn't fully developed the tertiary notes you would expect. But has the bones to go longer still. — 8 years ago

Domaine de Saint Pierre

Arbois Melon à Queue Rouge 2011

So fun and strange!!! Rich with interesting aromas of burnt wood and fresh oyster mushrooms. Lean acidity with salt on the finish. — 8 years ago

Van Volxem

Scharzhofberger Pergentsknopp Riesling 2001

Caramel and butterscotch upon opening. Residual sugar makes this slightly flabby. Lacking freshness, Riesling typicity and vineyard characteristics at the moment.
After a few hours the wine is finding its balance. Even more so on the next day, it's becoming less heavyhanded. Peach, apricot, some citrus appear. So, much better on day 2... Strange huh?
