Small Yet Mighty

Apothic

Inferno Small Batch Limited Release Red Blend

One of the best Apothis wines yet, its medium bodied and full flavor, absolutely exquisite. — 2 months ago

Marcel Lapierre

Morgon Gamay 2019

Goodness this is SO MUCH better than the no-sulphur version. The fruit is pure and shines through, it’s fresh, small red and black berries, bramble fruit, a fizzy quality to it, a touch of aperol orange peel, velvet-smooth yet fresh palate. Fantastic expression of pure Morgon fruit not hidden by overt funk — 2 years ago

Viuva José Gomes da Silva & Filhos

Collares Ramisco 2011

How can I count the ways: so fresh, so alive, that this 100% Ramisco is really in its infancy, yet delicious drunk now. Everything is small boned & small grained about it. Like just picked wild raspberries & blackberries, with some leaves & stems not sorted out. So high toned yet a deeper, incessant, sour plum like baseline. — 3 years ago

Knipser

Kirschgarten Großes Gewächs Spätburgunder 2018

Dark & brooding, with great depth & purity of fruit and dark spices in the background. Sour cherries, dark sweet cherries, a whiff of huckleberry.
Tightly wound on the palate with fine, grippy, juicy tannins and brilliant cherry acidity. This has presence & focused complexity yet remains very elegant.
This is a stunning, profound wine.
(The fact you can get a small bottle for 9€ on board of a Lufthansa flight is today’s surprise of the century!)

That is a surprise! This is an absolute top Winery famous for Pinot no one knows in the US. And the cherriegarden - Kirschgarten is their top Vineyard. Haven’t been there in Ages. You are lucky - Kudos to Lufthansa too.

I live Knipser’s top wines, but find his Ortsweine a bit bland, chunky and lacking the depth of his GGs or the elegance of the Ahr or Kaiserstuhl.
His Kirschgarten from the great 2018 is sublime!

Montevertine

Pian del Ciampolo Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2018

Let my heart count the ways: a super Tuscan yet subtle & pretty, & such personality with violets & candied fruit peel on nose. Juicy explosion on palate with layers of spice & sweet small red berries. Hint of gamey ness too. Great juice, don’t let it’s small frame fool you. Mostly Sangioveta(Sangiovese) with Canaiolo & Colorino. Paired with an actual Mets win (which may have distorted my notes)… — a year ago

Special Club Grand Cru Brut Champagne Blend 2008

#AgedWineTuesday

Light yellow in color with a golden hue.

Strong nose of yeast, spices, apples, citrus, bread, minerals and white pepper.

Medium plus in body, with small bubbles and medium plus acidity.

Dry on the palate with citrus, apples, yeast, bread, lemons, earth, minerals and spices.

Medium on the finish with limes and almonds.

This is a nicely aged 14 year old Champagne. Showing great complexity at this point.

Tasty and interesting. Rich, yet elegant. Loved the mouthfeel and the well integrated bubbles.

Nicely balanced right now, and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

Good by itself or with food, and better after 30 minutes of airtime.

I paired it with a delicious grilled Octopus.

A blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. disgorged October 2020.

12% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$90.

Fattoria dei Barbi (Colombini)

Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2010

Delicate light brick color, slightly viscous; concentrated deep nose of ripe and dried red cherries, strawberries, and mulberries and fennel, herbs, and madelaine cookies; medium dry mouthfeel, small fine tannins, opulent, mature, with medium-high acids and alcohol, and long finish. I don’t know when these will peak, but not yet, for sure. — 3 years ago

Imperial Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 2015

Primarily Tempranillo with small amounts of Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo blended in. Beautiful deep garnet color. Really complex aromas of bramble berries, dried rose petals, menthol and Forrest Floor. Berry fruit on the pallet with hints of black licorice, leather, tobacco, orange peel and minerals. Touch of burnt brown sugar on the finish. Smooth tannins and a silky/creamy texture. Excellent balance. Muscular yet delicate at the same time. Classic Rioja. — 2 years ago

Château La Fleur-Pétrus

Pomerol Red Bordeaux Blend 2019

Delectable Wine
9.8

The 2019 La Fleur-Pétrus is pure and total seduction. Trotanoy and perhaps also Hosanna have traditionally been viewed as more exclusive Pomerols in the Moueix portfolio. The more time passes, the less I share that view. Sure, La Fleur-Pétrus does not have the mystique associated from a small single vineyard - as many Pomerols do - and yet there is no denying the elegance and class here. Bright red fleshed fruit, blood orange and exotic spice race across the palate, framed by silky, plush tannins that wrap it all together. La Fleur-Pétrus is fabulous. That's all there is to it. Antica Terra

Aurata Chardonnay 2011

Shay A
9.5

Color me shocked at how good this was. I’m a big fan of Antica Terra wines, and while I’m always impressed, my expectations for this 10yr old OR Chardonnay were vastly blown out of the water.

The main reason I opened this bottle is I thought the age would have been more evident, and it would be channeling a more rich, slightly oxidized type profile, and would go with an assortment of blue cheese I was sampling at a small local event. Upon opening, color is still gorgeously yellow gold. First impression was it came across thin yet still had really vibrant acidity…very steely and mineral driven. About an hour later, this absolutely exploded out of the glass as of it was a different wine. Pear, grilled lemon and lots of honeysuckle aromatics. It bulked up on the palate with supreme texture and balance showing a kiss of oak. Creamy yet weightless. Lemon confit, honeyed golden delicious apple, sea spray, and a rounded finish with plenty of baking spices yet the core of minerality was still there. This left me scratching my head in a good way…I seriously need to find another. This is the best OR Chardonnay I’ve ever had.

@Eric Urbani : Check out OO Wines from Oregon. I’ve only had a few of their Chardonnay’s (haven’t had the pinots), but they are a new and impressive addition to the OR wine scene.
