El Jardin de la emperatriz rioja Alta Crianza 2018 Crianza- blend of Tempranillo, garnacha, maturana Tinta, graciano. Dark ruby. Maturano is dark like the cat. On the nose, smoke and oak with some dark berries. On the palate, smoke and oak and dark berry with strong acidity. Making it fresh. Strong tannins. — 3 years ago

Just a touch too tannic that perhaps wasn't needed considering the good freshness

Maturana Tinta comes from a clone rescued from old Maturana Tinta Vines, aged for 11 months in new French oak. Deep Ruby with aromas of black fruits and smoky notes. On the palate flavors of blackberry, tobacco and bits of cacao and black pepper. Lively acidity, medium finish ending with fruit, spice and smoky cigar box character. Waxy, melon , peach, citrus rind nose. Like a canary, honeydew, but field fresh.
Round, and so fresh… you might not guess 2014. There’s no heaviness from wood, though it’s there. Very nice on a summer evening with cod over potatoes and onion w some chorizo. Refreshing, yet full. As it warms it pays dividends, especially in the corners of your mouth.
An interesting creature, not grassy, leaning toward oxidative like LdH, but definitely it’s own thing.
85% Viura, 10% Garnacha, 5% Maturana. Now there’s one that needs investigation. Not your usual filler.
Glad I stumbled on it.

Powerful and fruit forward Rioja. Bold purple color. Mostly Tempranillo with small amounts of Graciano (15%) and Maturana (5%). There are some notes of mushroom, dark chocolate, herbs and balsamic vinegar, but this wine is dominated by intense red berry fruit. Long finish and soft tannins. This one needs food. Revisited in October 2021. Notes above still apply but more floral (rose petals and violets) on the nose than last time I had this wine. Deep ruby color. Revisited again in February 2022. Even more floral than previous tastings. Revisited again in July 2023 out of a jeroboam. Beautifully fresh! Outstanding! — 5 years ago
