Morlet Family Vineyards

Billet Doux Late Harvest Sémillon 2013

Shay A
9.4

My second set of wines to provide as part of a co-host event.

I picked these up during a visit to Morlet in the fall of ‘21. Sadly, these are the last of my initial stash. 58 semillon/36 SB/6 Muscat.

Poured blind for a group of 20 people at the end of a wine event, I was shocked that not one single person called this Cali. Many Sauternes, Barsac, and a few South African dessert wine guesses. It’s undeniably sporting botrytis flavors, but the richness has a wonderful spine of acidity. Honeyed mango, white peach and chock-full of orange blossom on the nose, there’s added candied spice and honeycomb on the palate. Didn’t pick up any nutty flavors (which I enjoy in Sauternes), but this was also fairly young. Extremely “fresh” for a dessert wine, if that makes sense. Best Cali dessert wine I’ve had, I think.

I think most people do not know that such a wine is made in California. I would have guessed the same.

Long Shadows Vintners

Poet's Leap Columbia Valley Riesling 2021

Delectable Wine
9.2

The 2021 Riesling Poet's Leap is decidedly green in character, wafting up with notes of lychee, lime zest and crushed green apple. This flows across the palate with grace, displaying a pleasant inner sweetness, as tropical citrus and saline-minerals add a lovely tension throughout. This tapers off with young mango notes accentuated by a salty flourish through the long and crisply refreshing finale. The 2021 is so balanced and refined, just 12.5% alcohol, and at just under one gram of residual sugar per liter. (Eric Guido, Vinous, March 2023) — a year ago

Greywacke

Kevin Judd Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2022

This is the 2022 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc. This is from Marlborough, New Zealand.

On the nose is the distinct aromas of lime, grapefruit, white peach, guava herbal notes, grass and pear.

On the palate there is grapefruit, lime, pineapple, mango and white peach.

This is a medium bodied wine with a cleanfresh mouth watering mothfeel medium+ acidity and a lind crusp citrus lime grapefruit finish. A wonderful wine for the money. Looks like the weekend should be a good one with some crisp cool weather. Wish you an eventful weekend. Please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🥂🥂🥂🥂

Château Suduiraut

Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend 2011

NOSE: coconut cream, custard, nilla wafers, grilled pineapple, a little mango. Smells like typical aged Suduiraut!

TASTE: the vanilla cookie is strong with this one - plus tres leches. 93.

Sauternes is one of my preferred pairings with pumpkin pie and whipped cream. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Agro de Bazán

Granbazán Etiqueta Verde Rías Baixas Albariño 2021

Medium lemon color with stone and tropical fruit aromas and floral citrus scents. On the palate flavors of apples, mango and pineapple with citrus zest and hints of chalky notes. Well balanced with lively acidity, long finish ending slightly creamy with mineral, citrus and wet stone nuances. Very nice. Pair this with some sushi! — 8 months ago

Illahe

Estate Willamette Valley Grüner Veltliner 2021

Not much aroma on this one. Lime and tropical flavors, good acidity. Fermented in acacia barrels, and you can taste that. No guava or mango flavors in this vintage — a year ago

Château Carbonnieux

Pessac-Léognan White Bordeaux Blend 2016

Opened another recently, legendary wine, said that in the 18th century was introduced to Sultan of Constantinople's palace b/c of its clarity and called "mineral water from Carbonnieux", defying Islamic law. Pale lemon with pronounce aromas of tropical and stone fruits with herb notes. On the palate flavors of melon, mango, apple, green herbs and a crisp mineral edge. Medium+ length, balanced acidity, ending with a fruit, citrus mineral character. Nice, aging well. — 3 years ago
