Le Cantine Di Greve In Chianti

Tenuta Sette Ponti

Crognolo Toscana Super Tuscan Blend 2019

In the heart of the Chianti lies Estate of Sette Ponti, 15 miles northwest of the city of Arezzo, past village of San Giustino Valdarno. Has 10% Merlot, aged in French Allier barriques, deep Ruby with red fruit aromas and floral notes. On the palate blackberry, plum and cherry flavors with blossom notes, spice and fine integrated tannins. Good balance, long finish ending with some oak and mineral tones. Nice! Will age a bit! Tasting well now! — 4 months ago

Marchesi Mazzei

Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2017

Cranberry, tart strawberry, tart cherry, menthol, oak, and cedar. Nice bright fruit with a long finish of zippy acid. Some tertiary notes of prune, burnt sugar, and mulled fruit are apparent, but it can age a bit more. I think it is in its prime now, though, at 7 years. Medium body, medium alcohol, high acid, and medium plus tannins. — a year ago

San Giusto a Rentennano

Chianti Classico Sangiovese 1997

Baking spices, dried flowers, and leather on the nose. It might “only be” a Chianti Classico, but when when you have a quality producer, their whole range can shine and at 23years, this wine is in a great spot. Dried cherries and plums in the palate with some spice notes. Beautiful wine! — 4 years ago

Riserva Ducale Oro Gran Selezione Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2014

This Gran Selezione is only produced in outstanding vintages, aged for 36 months. Dark Ruby with aromas of red fruits and earthy spice on the nose. On the palate ripe cherries, plum and dark fruit come with cinnamon spice, tobacco and cacao. Well developed tight tannins, good balance, sweet oak, long finish ending with a jolt of earthy spice. A tremendous value. Outstanding, but decant first! — 5 years ago

Fattoria Viticcio

Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2010

2010 vintage. Slightly rustic, but otherwise this tastes quite young. Needs a multi-hour decant or a few more years in the cellar to smooth out. Still has substantial structure and fine tannins. Dark fruits, bitter Cherry, minerality and a brooding finish. Best with food. Not really a stand-alone sipping wine. — 7 years ago

Marchesi Antinori

Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2013

Castello di Volpaia

Riserva Chianti Classico Sangiovese 2020

Ruby in color with aromas of ripe cherry, raspberry, vanilla, and earthy hints. Decanting softens the smoky notes, revealing bright red fruit and a touch of licorice. The palate is dry and well-balanced, with smooth tannins, refreshing acidity, and a long, fruity finish. A versatile, well-structured wine that pairs easily with food.

Older bottles of Chianti are some of the wine world’s unknown treasures. Everyone is happy to age Brunello but you don’t see many people putting away Chianti in the cellar. And they’re missing out. If you can find old bottles you can sometimes get them for a song, as I did a bunch of these from @garagiste_wine. You want to talk about punching above your weight?!? These suckers are classy AF. Dark fruit with leather, a touch of graphite and earth. Great acidity still, decant and watch them shine. 1996 Terreno “Riserva” Chianti Classico, Tuscany, Italy. ⁣ — 4 years ago

Castello di Bossi

Riserva Berardo Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2009

Not for sipping unless a good sixty minutes before in a decanter. Typical characteristics of a CCR...plus some good old "Gaul women" smoke on the back end. Will go beautifully with tonight's charred fatty T-bone. A few left in the cellar...drink up...its arrived...and will only head South from here. — 7 years ago

Castello di Ama

Vigneto San Lorenzo Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2010

See previous Note. Old plummie, red cherry notes. Barb said dusty and pine needles. A cooler vintage. I said red cherries and freshly tilled loam. As Galloni said “In 2010 Ama did not bottle their single vineyard selections. All the best fruit went here.” Tasting more the quality of a Brunello than a Chianti Classico. In 2015, the WS Top 100 meant something. To look at it the last few years it is puzzling. I recently read their website for the criteria they use to come up with their top 100 and all I could do after reading the criteria and seeing their 2024 selections is scratch my head.

Agricola Querciabella

Chianti Classico Sangiovese Blend 2019

I have not had a Chianti in years, having eschewed it’s rustic charms for the opulence of Brunello. If Queciabella is any indication, Chianti has greatly evolved in my absence. Sour and black cherry, cedar, leather, and a hint of oak with mellow tannins are a real pleasure. None of the toughness I recall from Sangiovese. Perfect with roasted meats. But you knew that. — 2 years ago
