Perfume of cedar, tobacco, leather and dark fruits. Palate still has grainy tannins - not fully integrated yet but close - lush plum and blackberry to fill things out that got deeper and more velvety with time and an excellent finish. Nose is black cherry, plum, thyme, lavender, black pepper, and a touch of smoke. Pretty complex and inviting.

Palate opens with those black cherry/kirsch notes and then transitions to dried green herbs and medium acidity. Tannins are smooth and lend just enough dryness to keep it balanced. Good length with lingering plum skin.

Great little Rhone red with delicious approachable fruit and some nice spice subtlety. Where others at this price point (€11!) are austere or overly simple, this one delivers on deliciousness and complexity. The overall structure makes it quite drinkable too. — 6 years ago

Christmas lunch date at V. Mertz. Disgorged January 2013. No formal notes. Rich in style with bruised apple, brioche, honey and some nutty, oxidative notes too. Zippy acid still. A truly wonderful way to close out the meal. — 4 years ago

Though not the same as it was pre-COVID -19, a handful of us were able to gather (while keeping our distance) to celebrate being back together and opened some fun wines to share. Wine is always better with good company.

The ‘04 has always been a favorite of mine, but this is really close. Aromatically, it is decadent and seductive. Sweet and ripe red, blue and black fruits dipped in fondue chocolate, with graham cracker and espresso, but also a charcoal/graphite like mineral note. It is silky on the palate with waves of more chocolate dipped fruits, nutmeg, Mexican vanilla and dust all wrapped in a rich profile that is still elegant and balanced. Sexy fucking wine. Sexy is overused but I’d get in a hastily planned 3 month relationship with this wine that would end in bitter heartbreak. Gorgeous nose. Flowers, big cherries, lipstick vibe. Palate is ripe and opulent with lovely sucrosity and wonderful freshness. Silky tannins and great mouthfeel. Very 15 but also very alluring. Long finish. Wonderful mineral drive and very complex. Light garnet color. Very interesting nose and palate of red fruits, rose petals, dried herbs, black tea, bergamot and sweet baking spices. Hint of eucalyptus on the long, complex and earthy finish.
