Mare Chiaro Cirò Bianco White Blend

Ippolito 1845 – Mare Chiaro Cirò Bianco 2025 – Cirò DOC, Calabria, Italy 🇮🇹

Overview
A joyful expression of Calabria’s flagship white grape, 100% Greco Bianco. Produced near the Ionian Sea, Mare Chiaro beautifully captures the region’s coastal identity with vibrant freshness, saline minerality, and Mediterranean character. Far from a conventional white wine, it offers both remarkable drinkability and a fascinating glimpse into one of Italy’s oldest wine regions.

Aromas & Flavors
Bright aromas of citrus, white peach, tropical fruit, white flowers, and fresh herbs lead into flavors of lemon zest, pear, stone fruit, and subtle saline minerality. The finish is crisp, savory, and distinctly reminiscent of a sea breeze.

Mouthfeel
Light to medium-bodied with lively acidity and a beautifully balanced texture. Refreshing, mineral-driven, and wonderfully clean, it glides effortlessly across the palate before finishing with lingering coastal freshness.

Food Pairings
Perfect with grilled octopus, oysters, seafood pasta, fried calamari, ceviche, grilled fish, or fresh burrata with herbs.

Verdict
A delicious coastal white that overdelivers in personality and originality. Fresh, expressive, and endlessly drinkable, it showcases why Calabria deserves far more attention among lovers of distinctive Italian white wines.

Did You Know?
Greco Bianco has been cultivated in Calabria for well over two millennia, with roots tracing back to the arrival of Greek settlers in southern Italy during the era of Magna Graecia (“Greater Greece”). Today, it remains the historic backbone of Cirò Bianco and one of Italy’s oldest continuously cultivated indigenous white grapes.

🍷 Personal Pick
This bottle was simply fun from the very first sip. I loved its coastal personality, saline finish, and the way it kept inviting another glass without ever becoming heavy. It’s the kind of wine I enjoy pouring blind because almost everyone asks the same question afterward: “What was that? Can I have another glass?” That’s always a great sign. Cheers!

Nautilus Dry Red Mavrodaphne 2017

A lovely Greek wine. Raisin aromas that are almost port like. Prune, plum, and smoke notes. A great change of pace and if you like other old world wines, I'd recommend you give this a try. Good value at $18. — 5 years ago

Clean, crisp, crystal clear.
Chablis’esque purity with limestone minerality and saline freshness.
Very proper, very food friendly, with nice depth & length. Yet not as exciting as I expected.

Viatzo Dry White Blend 2022

Ooh what a great surprise! Proof again that price doesn’t really matter with wine. Only €8, made here in Corfu, and subtly complex. A blend of 3 Greek grapes I didn’t know before: Kakotrygis, Malagouzia and Roditis. Petrol and sherry on the nose, which calms down after some air. Apple, pear and lemon fruits. Dry through and through, soft grip, with an underlying oaky vanilla cognac dimension. I have no idea how this was made, or if it was actually aged in oak, but it feels like it. — 2 years ago

Mov Prephylloxera Mavro 2020

Poured through a Venturi into a decanter prior to service. For a grape that has traditionally been used to make less-than-serious fortified wines, this was quite a serious Mavrodaphne indeed. From ungrafted vines, the 2020 “Mov” pours purple in color. A touch reticent early, this is developing and only beginners to open after about 30min after which it revealed it’s layered red and dark fruits, earth, cocoa, purple flowers, minerals and soft baking spices. Structure was medium+. Balanced and paired well with our beef and grilled eggplant. Only 800 bottles produced. — 3 years ago

Half of us loved this, the other half not so much. Count me in the first group. Pours a deep yellow, a bit cloudy. Quite rich yet also tense and tight, lemon focused with some yeasty grip. Some orchard fruit shows with time. This has some heft, with a grippy, yeasty finish. Needed a decant. Super complex. Striking and unique. Need more... — 5 years ago
