This, alongside the ‘09 Rivers-Marie Summa OV and the ‘12 Marcassin, were all tied (in my opinion) for WOTN. This is a massive Pinot and benefitted from some air time. Cherry liqueur like enter which then turns darker to a black cherry baked pie, spice, and candied blackberries. There was a sweet, but not rich, note on the mid palate that reminds me of a mixed berry cobbler. Lengthy and flavor packed finish. Just beginning to enter a prime drinking window. Yellow-white, excellent clarity. White floral and lemon peel notes in nose. Candied lemon fruit flavor, slight trace of lemon fruit sweetness with a core of lemon pulp tartness, good acidity overall, mineral finish with lingering lemon fruit flavor. Really intriguing varietal, well made wine. Five variations on fresh lemon expression in a white table wine? It could be, impressionistically, at least. — 7 years ago

The Wine Spies Enigma Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Napa Valley California


It's time for my #FridayCabernetfix.
Here is a very tasty Cabernet.

Inky in color with a very short reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, cooked cherries, cedar, licorice, vanilla, light earth, chocolates, tobacco, spices, herbs and peppercorn.

Full-bodied and bold with medium acidity and fat legs.

Dry and very fruity on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, leather, vanilla, earth, spices, chocolates, tobacco, mocha, coke and black pepper.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries.

The young Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell mountain is delicious already. Showing a great mouthfeel with nice complexity.

Good right out of the bottle and a little better after 90 minutes in a decanter. Already yummy and will continue to age nicely in the next 10 years.

Rich and fruit forward. Powerful with lots of chocolate and cedar notes.

This Delicious wine has good potential to become a 95+ point wine. Showing nice structure, soft and elegant.

Good by itself as a sipping wine, and will pair nicely with BBQ meats. I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged in (100% new) French oak barrels for 24 months. A tiny production of only 4 barrels.

15% alcohol by volume.

On the Lawn at Tanglewood this afternoon with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Our conductor Andris Nelsons is leading GERSHWIN (Piano Concerto in F), GERSHWIN (Variations on “I Got Rhythm,” for piano and orchestra) and STRAVINSKY (Petrushka) with the amazing Jean-Yves Thibaude as the piano soloist on the two first works presented today. Jean-Yves is by far among our favorite pianists to grace the Koussevitzky Shed stage, so graceful, yet poignant!

Hot days call for cool wines, today there are some fun ones planned for sharing.

One of my bottles. After getting these in a few weeks back, I was like a kid on Christmas to see how it was tasting. All the check marks for this to be a knockout in a few years. Wonderful red and black fruit medley with sharp acidity. Mineral/graphite on the palate and sandalwood. Toasted black cherries and ripe plum. — 8 years ago

Older Marcassin pinots...what more can be said other than special. However, I think this one was quite muted on the nose and wasn’t entirely as expected. Age has leaned this out, and the red and black fruits are battling with earth and herbal components. Dirty raspberries and bay leaf on the finish. Even a slightly off bottle of Marcassin is impressive, so thanks for bringing, @David L ! — 8 years ago
