Charly Thevenet

Domaine des Croix (David Croix)

Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2016

Pop and pour. Still way too young, but a solid Corton-Charly. On the nose: soft mango, lime, oak toast, struck match, charcoal and black pepper. On the palate: good acidity, slightly thin, but lemon oil, green apple, black pepper. Only complaint is that this is slightly hollow on the mid-palate at this stage. Otherwise, everything is in its place..maybe time will set everything straight. — 4 years ago

Domaine Poisot Père et Fils

Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru Chardonnay 2014

Double decanted. Notes from 3 hrs open. I am in love with this wine. Stylistically, this is the opposite end of the spectrum from, say, a Louis Latour or Leflaive Corton Charly: this is so vibrant, and lemon drenched mineral, Corton Charlemagne. The nose shows green apple, and lemon curd soaked crushed rock with a very soft nutty note; so intense, I can smell this from a foot away from my glass. On the palate, fantastic dry extract, super-vibrant acid, followed by guava and then lemon and crushed rocks. Excellent weight and a long finish. An acid-head's Corton Charly? Anyway, this is definitely a baby: either needs a very long decant (3hrs at a minimum) or another 3-5 years in bottle. — 6 years ago

Cuvée E.J. Thevenet Quintaine Viré-Clessé Chardonnay 2011

Lychee, kiwi, elderflower, bitter almond flower, honeysuckle, hints of saffron. Snapping rounded acidity, full bodied, juicy rich texture, long floral, slightly honeyed finish. Juxtaposed delicacy over richness, mineral notes expressed despite touches of RS. Unique Burgundy. 30-45 minute decanting recommended. — 7 years ago

Clos Rougeard

Saumur Champigny Cabernet Franc 2010

Awww shit, my first Rougeard! So stoked on this. As a Loire Cab Franc nut, getting to taste this is amazing and it definitely lives up to expectations. Hope I can get my hands on a bottle of Les Bourg or Les Poyeux sometime, because even this appellation-level bottle is insane. This pours a ruby-garnet hue of medium (-) to medium concentration, fading to a burnished pink rim that is just starting to show signs of age. Moderately concentrated, elegant, ethereal nose of perfectly-ripe wild raspberry and blackberry, crushed rose petals, graphite and pencil shavings, lightly grilled green bell pepper, and a smidge of already really well integrated new oak that comes across in this particular wine as a subtle espresso undertone. On the palate, the fruit character is ever-so-slightly underripe (in a positive, refreshing manner) and there's an extra shot of cool graphite mineral intensity but otherwise is pretty congruent with the nose. Perfect amount of pyrazine character; enough to add complexity and freshness yet doesn't dominate at all. Medium (-) to medium body, medium (+) acid, and medium to medium (+) intensity of incredibly fine grained, supple tannins. Insane complexity and length. Honestly between the oak and incredibly skillful phenolic extraction, the texture is the most intriguing thing about this wine. Definitely worth the hype. I somehow managed to snag his for under $100 too so I'm pretty stoked on that too, haha. Definitely could keep going in the cellar for a while but honestly still delicious now especially if you give it some air. Some pretty incredible stuff. Also, RIP Charly Foucault. — 8 years ago

Morgon Gamay 2014

If you want to impress a Somm with a bottle of wine, bring a Grand Cru Gamay. I hate using the term Beaujolais. It gives a lot of people the lesser impression of Beaujolais Nouveau which, equates to the impression left by Blue Nun in the 70’s/early 80’s and Yellow Tail in and around 2000.

This is one of my favorite producers of Gamay, a member of the “Gang of Four”; Lapierre, Thevenet, Foillard & Breton. There is a fifth honoree member to the “Gang of Four”, Yvon Metras, who I enjoy equally. If you want to finally appreciate this varietal, look for one of these producers from Morgan or Fleurie.

The nose reveals; dark cherries, blackberries, dark plum, stewed plum, baked strawberries, blueberry hues, spearmint, granitic minerals/soil, dark berry cola, thyme, rich forest floor, touch of cinnamon, very light caramel, dark chocolate, Indian spices, berry bubblegum, touch of band-aid, steeped fruit teas, limestone minerals, a whiff of black pepper, dark red, purple fresh flowers with shades of violets.

The body is full, rich and guides over the palate. It shows some tannins. The structure & tension are still big. The length and balance are at the beginnings of truly rounding into butterfly form. Still will benefit from 5 plus years in bottle. Bright red florals are far more pronounced on the palate. Ripe/bright; dark tart cherries, blackberries, dark plum, stewed plum, baked strawberries, half baked rhubarb with lovely blueberry hues, blood orange & dry raisins. Spearmint, tree sap, granitic minerals/soil pressed in to the palate, dark berry cola, orange peel, thyme, rich forest floor, touch of cinnamon, very light caramel, dark chocolate, Indian spices, berry bubblegum, touch of band-aid, steeped fruit teas, limestone minerals, hints of black pepper, dark red, purple fresh flowers with shades of violets. The acidity is like a warm summer rain shower. The long, rich, ripe, well balanced, elegant finish is nicely persistent for minutes.

12% ABV 👍

@Ming Liang I would never say a wine or varietal is for everyone. However, I think, if you give a few of the high quality producers (of said varietal) a try after letting them resolve in bottle awhile, then, it’s fair to say, “meh, not for me!” Look forward to your thoughts when you try one or two. Cheers! 🍷

En Voiture Simone Régnié Gamay 2019

A Régnié which expresses itself on the side of black cherries, kirsch, or Plum Eau de vie. The nose is very expressive and counterbalances a very dry character in the mouth, almost salty. Aerial, accurate. To drink.
Note revised upwards, at D+1 because it held up admirably and even opened up to additional nuances. A sincere wine. Really well done.

Great bottle,

This all estate grown gem from Baron Fuente is composed of 45% Chardonnay, 40% Meunier, and 15% Pinot Noir from around Charly-sur-Marne. This drinks great right now because of the long ageing that the team at Baron Fuente have lavished on it, but will also keep great in good storage over the medium term. Grande Réserve Brut Champagne Blend

The images aren’t flashy like Krug, Billecart or Ruinart etc. but, if you want a really nice, well priced Blanc de Blanc Champagne, this is for you. At, $24.99, I would challenge anyone to find another Champagne let alone a good one at this price point. As well, an equal Cremant or sparking wine in the same price range. Exceptional QPR here!

The nose is bright and fresh. Crisp green apple, lighter color citrus, overripe pineapple, orange peel and spray, touch of golden apple, touch of bruised pear, ginger notes, vanilla cream soda, caramel notes, spice, hints of baguette crust, honey, darker minerals with chalk, sea spray, fruit blossoms and withering yellow lilies.

The wine brings rich, reductive freshness and substantial acidity to your palate. Crisp green apple, lighter color citrus, overripe pineapple, orange peel and spray, under ripe green melon, touch of golden apple, light bruised pear, ginger notes, vanilla cream soda, caramel notes, marzipan, white spice, hints of baguette crust, honey, darker minerals that press the palate deeply with teeth & heat, nice chalkiness, sea spray, fruit blossoms with withering yellow lilies. The finish is quite nice with richness and goes on and on and on.

Baron Fuente is a Champagne negotiant that also owns thirty-eight hectares of their own vineyards. They are located in a village called Charly at the far western edge of Champagne. The side closest to Paris.
