Out of mag. At almost 20 years, thought it needed a few more. — 8 days ago

Lunch 🥪

K&L notes as follows, Grand Pontet is an interesting property, positioned in the neighborhood of other stars of the appellation such as Châteaux Canon, Beau-Séjour-Bécot and Clos Fourtet. It is, however, a small estate, a mere 14 hectares, and its prices are much better than some of its more prestigious neighbors. In 1980 it was purchased by Gerard and Dominique Bécot, owners of the neighboring Beau-Séjour-Bécot. They have applied the same high standards to both Châteaux in their possession, and their winemaking team crafts Grand Pontet alongside the Beau-Séjour-Bécot wines. Recently purchased in 2021 by Domaines Clarence Dillon (Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion, et al.), the property was combined with and incorporated into Château Quintus. Full-bodied and luscious, this Grand Pontet is laden with ripe blackberry fruits, savory tobacco, licorice notes, and ripe, softened tannins. It’s seamless and bold, not shy. It’s going to require something decadent to pair with, such as filet mignon or some other black-tie dish with plenty of flavor and rich umami presence.

Château Pontet-Canet

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Lovely nose of slow cooked beef and heirloom pork, red and black roses, brown bread stuffing, fine tabak, vanilla-in-bread, dusty black cherry, dried black currant and espresso powder. Black olive rounds the palate in a textural wave that intensifies to charred grape gravy, very sharp forest berry, lavender, holly, pine nettle, and sage. Younger offering here but fully integrated and freshly offering dark bark and dark castings with lively fruit and floral punctuation.

Sequoia Grove

Rutherford Bench Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

This was awesome! PnP’d. Very balanced wine. Medium plus depth. Integrated dark blue and black fruit with oak, vanilla, and cedar. Somewhat similar to Pontet Canet. Lovely silky texture and medium plus finish. Exactly how Napa Cab should taste! — 5 months ago

Château Latour

Le Pauillac de Chateau Latour Red Bordeaux Blend 2016

J. Kim
9.1

The 2016 has rounder fatter fruit and less angular architecture than the 2010, and more intense structure than the 2015. The aroma is a classic old school Pauillac, black fruit, tobacco, cigar box and graphite, on top of leathery barnyard bass notes that one often finds in old Lynch Bages or Pontet Canet. More masculine than feminine with lack of vanilla and minty notes. No overripeness, over-oakiness, over-manipulation this year. Type IV Bordeaux in which the aromatic complexity and the structural intensity is well-matched. Less polish this year but the balance between the presence and the reserve is so well-judged. — a month ago

Château Cadet-Pontet

St. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend 2010

A bit funky on the nose from this bottle. Dusty notes, earth, salt, briny olive and olive tapenade from the Merlot base. Tons of acid still driving this backbone. 15.5%, this finish isn’t messing around. — 7 months ago

Neal Family Vineyards

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Neal never stops impressing!!! Would have guessed Bordeaux all the way. 1hr+ decant. Nose of dark cherries, cedar, and menthol. Blue and black fruit on the palate with well integrated alcohol. Medium depth and medium plus finish. Reminds me of Chateau Pontet-Canet but 1/5 of the price. Neal rocks!! — 9 months ago
