Well balanced field blend that goes with just about everything. — 7 years ago
How else to warm up for a trade tasting of invigorating Champagne this afternoon? Penetrating Sercial Madeira from the year that brought us the Boy Scouts of America. If wine were merit badges perhaps I'd nearly be an Eagle by now... After this evening's tasting I'll have quite a heavy merit badge sash for Champagne -an obsession that can reach no surfeit -it becomes more fascinating and evermore nuanced. For the moment however I'm awash in crushed kumquats in honey, marmalade, hazelnuts and roast peanuts -all layered among so much more in one of the richest Sercial Madeiras I've tried to date. — 9 years ago
Morgante makes some of my favorite Nero d''Avola. It's just their thing. Rich and bold, abundant tannins and ripe fruit, leather and earthy hints. Barely out of the distinction badge. — 9 years ago
Blanco. Flavorful and crisp. Zippy with some citrus notes and a hint of spice at the end. Very light with almost no alcohol presence on the palate. — 9 years ago
Tasted single blind - Rich and spicy. Baking spices think nutmeg. Stewed strawberry. Lifted rose pedal aromas. Darker fruit, black cherry, with linear acidity and coating tannin. Firm, needs air and likely more time in the cellar. — 6 years ago
A new favorite. — 8 years ago

Dark purple with light violet accents and a wide brim. An exciting and slightly exotic nose of wild blueberries, lavender, beautifully subtle herbs, and moist soil. No, this isn’t Cahors, nor is it Argentina. This is pure Napa and it wears that as a badge of honor. So silky smooth, with softer tannins and medium acidity, this isn’t nearly as big as it could be. Showing really nice balance, this isn’t hedonistic at all. Restrained and refined are the words that come to mind. Despite that restraint, there is power here. On the palate, black cherries and fresh blueberries are dominant with garden herbs and smoked meat are secondary. Spice and vanilla on the medium long finish. All these guys do is make great stuff. — 6 years ago
It wants to be so much better than it actually is. The bottle is heavy and beautiful, it bears a sticker that says 99 points and wears it like a badge of honour... but it's just a glorified primitivo. Like what you would imagine a primitivo to taste like if you could reduce two bottles into one and make it way more intense. It's an intensive primitivo. Basically. — 7 years ago

Lovely bright floral red made from the Ruché grape from a DOCG around Monferrato, northeast of Asti. This Scarpa bottling has a DOC badge. High end producer, low production at 3880 bottles. Reminds me of some high-end Dolcetto’s (Giacosa etc) but without some of the blue fruit notes. Perfect with dark chocolate, but enough acid to pair with anything rich. Will buy again. — 5 years ago
