Pure Sangiovese from Montemercurio in Montepulciano. Deep ruby coloured in the glass. Traditional Sangiovese flavours, including cherries, spice, earthiness and a hint of balsamic. Good mouth feel and acidity leaving a robust finish. The best grapes from the south west facing vineyards are hand harvested, spend 18-20 days on the skins, 18 months in large Slovenian oak vats, another 6 months in smaller vats and 12 months in bottle before release. #italianredwine #tuscanwine #sangiovese #montepulciano #montemercurio #messaggero #nobiledimontepulciano #vinorosso #italianwine — 8 years ago
Entry level “Super Tuscan”. This blend of Cabernet , Merlot and Sangiovese is pleasant to drink with expected flavours of cherry, blackberry, some spice and a little chocolate. Good with pizza or simple pasta with meat sauce. Nice entry level wine but not a cellar keeper.

Not what I would think of as a traditional Barolo in style. Young with a lot of fruit at the beginning, joined by coffee, liquorice, spice and some earthiness. Not much tannic structure leads me to believe this is best consumed young. The 2011 was a much better example of the region and winemaker.

Lots of ripe cherry, with tobacco, cedar and a touch of black pepper. Full bodied and smooth. Tannins are balanced yet still with a slight tightness on the finish. Will drink well for another 3-5 years. Good value at $24.

Very enjoyable Chianti Classico from the 2010 vintage. Deep ruby in colour, the wine shows lots of juicy ripe black cherry on the palate. It opens up to reveal layers of leather, cedar, a little chocolate and a subtle smokiness. This is a full bodied wine with well balanced tannins and a gorgeous lengthy finish

Jamaica allspice submerged in black cherry, black raisin, African violets, red roses, cooked poppyseed, grilled, wine marinated steak with rosemary garnish. The palate is silky with medium mouthfeel and stealthy tannic hooks are whisked away like burrs and prickles on a satin sock. Sweet Connecticut wrap of tobacco is assisted by a minute mocha and black peppercorn. This took a while to open, surprisingly, but well worth the wait!

Heavy floral notes with lavender and violet, carnation, cherry blossom and red rose, booming amid dried black cherry espresso and cocoa, though distinctly separate. Dark toasted sesame, rye bread, and crumbled earth. Bright cherry palate turns dusty in all the right ways, leaning into cocoa nib and espresso oils. Lovely and dry with dried cran and red currant but exhibits miles of lingering blood orange citrus and crystalline cherry. Gorgeous. Eternally evolving and all of it amazing. The concrete egg has made something ethereal that also shows a mysterious depth. Great range.

Full disclosure, I am a big Aglianico fan, so I might be a little biased! The 100% Aglianico grapes for this wine are grown on the hills of Taurasi in Campania at 450 meters above sea level. The fertile soils are rich in minerals and volcanic ash and calcium, giving this wine some of its distinctive character. Pre-fermentation maceration at low temperature, maceration on the skins for 20 days and malolactic fermentation in barrique rounds out vinification. The wine is aged for 3 months in steel and 24 months in French barriques. Sampled after 3 hours in a decanter, this wine has character and an elegant boldness. The nose reveals dark cherry, spice and a little pepper. On the palate it is full bodied, with black cherry, tobacco, black pepper, leather and I hate say it, tar. The tannins are well balanced but still show layers of complexity. A lovely elegant wine that should continue to develop over the next 7-10 years. An absolute lovely example of a well made Aglianico from Nativ.

Still quite young and a little harsh on the palate. Undertones of cherry, leather and a little barnyard. Still a little tense and tannic, but should benefit from more bottle time. Should start to drink well in 2018.

Single vineyard 2013 Gran Selezione is 95% Sangiovese / 5% Merlot. Dark cherry, spice, a little earthiness and chocolate on the palate. Full bodied, concentrated and smooth. Decanted for 3 hours, which helped to loosen up the firm tannins and give it a nicely balanced finish. Affordable Gran Selezione at $34.

2nd bottle of this wine in as many weeks. This one not quite as developed or complex as the last but still a good example of this Chianti vintage. Typical dark cherry, with some wood and spice, but a little disappointing on the finish. Chalk it up to this individual bottle as the last one was very quite lovely!

Very nice 2006 Aglianico from Castel Del Monte in Puglia. Deep ruby in colour with black cherry, leather, liquorice, black pepper and chocolate on the palate. Well balanced tannins and acidity. Drinking well at 10 years old. A good value at $18

Radiant orange tint on garnet. Meaty with plum and fig, raspberry with pipe tobacco and pine tar with a sweet burnt rye aspect. There are subtle strawberries and black cherry, blood orange flambè, and dried violet on the nose. Dried raspberry and blackberry, cranberry tannin combo, wolf berry, red currant and smoke. Delicious with Bresaola!! .

2011 was a good year for Valle Reale in Abruzzo., very similar weather to 2007. The Sant’Eusanio vineyard is a small patch nestled among pine woods. At 497 m it is the highest zone in Valle Reale, this helps with the large diurnal swing. The vines were planted in 2002 in soil that is poor and pebbly This produces a unique “mountain expression” of Montepulciano with high acidity and fresh, slightly lighter fruit than expected. This bottle was opened 2 days ago, still has lots of acidity, cherry, a little spice and herbal notes. This vintage should be good for another 5-7 years and represents a good bargain.

Poggio al Tufo is a relatively new estate in the once swampy Maremma in coastal Tuscany. Tommasi, of Amarone fame planted vineyards here in 1997. The Alicante Bouschet grape is new to Tuscany, although getting more popular. This wine is a deep purple in the glass , delivering pepper, black fruits and smoke to the palate. Tannins are still a little harsh so this will benefit from another year or two in the bottle. Interesting wine from this interesting grape.

This Chianti Classico from Mazzei is 90% Sangiovese from 4 different clones and 10% Malvasia Nera and Merlot. This lovely example spent 12 months in small oak barrels, just enough to give it a slight oaky feel in the mouth. Dark cherry, white pepper, lots of acid and a little earthiness deliver the classic Chianti flavours. The wine is well balanced, full bodied and has a pleasing finish. This will easily last another 10 years. The Mazzei family have been making wine at Castello di Fonterutoli in Tuscany since 1435. Impressive!

This 80% Sangiovese Chianti Classico delivers the usual red fruit, red cherry flavours. Full bodied and smooth in the mouth, the acidity and fine tannins deliver a well balanced wine. Good example from a good vintage. $29 in Ontario.

100% Sangiovese from several estates near the historic town of Montepulciano.
Deep ruby in the glass, this wine spent 18 months in oak and delivers expected Sangiovese flavours of black cherry, earth, leather, tobacco and a little spice. Good complexity and balance with enough tannic structure to last another 5-7 years.

Red cherry nose expands to red dye, portobello, morel and walnut shell. Dried rose petal and twisted violet petal open to soft pork and beef grilled sweetness, and loam. Lurking sensualities; dried cherries persist. A mix of cherries in varied stages of ripeness and raisination stitch themselves together in liquid satin and come so close to perfection, but there is a slight unraveling context on the finish that doesn’t disappoint, just asks for follow through. Probably comes around in time as the tannins are rustic and the wine from a stellar vintage.
