Warm cherry with cinnamon, tobacco leaf, licorice root extract, smoke, pine nettle, cocoa, pipe tobacco, dark violets, rose petal. Medium mouthfeel shows the tar and black cherry heart and expressive blood orange, cinnamon, dried cranberry, expansive black currant and smoldering earth. Holiday spices. A tremendous offering!

1999 Aldo Conterno Cicala Barolo: Bipolar, schizophrenic, diamond in the rough! Bipolar - Acid & tannin made it you friend with food. Caressed a slow roast shoulder of lamb done your throat. It's your Arch Nemesis without food, hard nosed and pushing you to the limit. Schizophrenic - it had more facets than a diamond. Initially looking oxidised, opening to reveal glimpses of delicate perfumes, savoury Yumminess, revealing hidden layers that intrigued over the course of several hours. It had a story to tell and it was a complex one! #FilthyOldVino #Barolo #Nebbiolo #RedWine #Italy #1999 #Conterno For more #filthygoodvino from the cellar check out http://filthygoodvino.com/from-the-cellar/ — 10 years ago
Radiant orange tint on garnet. Meaty with plum and fig, raspberry with pipe tobacco and pine tar with a sweet burnt rye aspect. There are subtle strawberries and black cherry, blood orange flambè, and dried violet on the nose. Dried raspberry and blackberry, cranberry tannin combo, wolf berry, red currant and smoke. Delicious with Bresaola!! .

One of the all time Barolo greats, this did not disappoint. I figured it might be pretty coiled up but it relented some with some air. At open the nose was pretty tight as expected so this was a decant for a while to open up. After about 2 hours it relented and while still pretty tight it was a glorious preview of what this wine will offer with another 5+ years, I'd even say 10.
The color was a shade or two darker than a medium ruby. The nose was all about the tar right now, with a hint of floral and red fruits in the background accented with some spice box and leather.
The palate relented less than the nose with fairly firm grippy tannins on the finish, not surprising given the yourthful encounter thus far. Perfect acidity had my palate begging for a braised of Osso Buco!
