Black cherries stand out against earthy beet and blackberry. Graphite rings and smoke curls around bay and sage, acanthus and peppercorn. Green in spots and muted on the palate, this one is unfortunately young and missing something. Pepper and cedar overpower the fruits and the tannins are aggressive here, giving a stemmy impression. May develop over time but gangly and awkward here.

Classic aged #stestephe - probably fair to say this second wine was well into a gentle decline at this age. Dried cherry, fruit, marzipan notes, touch of bricking on the rim. 2011 vintage, so low expectations, but wine is stunning. Grill aggregation unfolds into violets and cypress, bacon and porcini. Timber yard resins, reishi coffee, baking chocolate, burnt parchment, gunpowder tea, and dried rose petal. Soft, black and bing cherry serrated by black blades of dark tobacco, black currant, cassis, smoldering acanthus, crisp oregano, cardamom, and tart blueberry. Color is brick, edifice is showing cracks, but architecture intact. Don’t hold. Slay and ascend.

2010 vintage. Black cherry and black currant with cigar box and allspice and a touch of multi-grain on the nose. Black and bing cherry with chewy tannins and rooibos. Plum tartness, and an interesting grape-y aspect. Ripe currant and licorice.

Give it a day or more in the wine fridge and it transforms into a strong QPR BDX - purple, black fruit comes alive backed by leather, earthy notes on nose. The wine poured a beautiful dark Brick/blood red. We decanted it and let it breathe for about 45 minutes first. It has wonderful flavors of earth, graphite, dried fruit. This is another example I think of buying a lower cost wine from a great vintage and putting it up. It certainly could’ve Aged longer. 2000 vintage. Warm, brown bread, cherry-blackberries baked with dried black currants and nutmeg. Further aromas of porcini, portobellos, and cornflower. Smooth, with raisin and round tannins, prunes and dried cherry. Spiced judiciously with vanilla, cedar, and espresso.
