Château Musar

Gaston Hochar Grand Cru Red Blend 1999

Some years ago the people at the chateau told me that they believe that old wines definitely should be decanted and aired for many hours. (They told the analogy about leaving your house for a week, a year or many years and how long do you open the windows then)
I was alway a bit cautious but nevertheless took some 4/6 hours with a bottle.
This one I followed their advice and gave it a 24! hours decant.
So this 9.5 is for all the people that made this wine! You have silk and silk! A nice acid kick at the end even. Fruit and cinnamon! This is Musar next level. 🙏🏻

Dönnhoff

Oberhäuser Leistenberg Kabinett Riesling 2018

Smoky, like a struck match. Good lemon and orange on the palate, slight lime brown sugar mojito scent, lots of rocks. Melon, cantaloupe or honeydew. Some cucumber. Smooth acid, lots of it, round and lush moving along the cheeks. Mint. A honeyed finish. A bit out of balance, but good still. I’ve got the windows open, getting ready to eat some sushi. It’s a good night to be stuck in an apartment in Brooklyn with the right supplies.

Gets better after a day open in the fridge. Integrates and becomes slightly sweet balanced on a sharp knife edge of acid minerals and swimming pool vibes.

@Aravind Asok it was excellent with some air. After a night in the fridge everything was perfectly knitted together. The reduction was gone, for one. It’s pretty off-dry, and very prickly with minerals and acid, which needed that time to come together. I’ve had a couple of other basic estate 2018s but this was the first cru I’ve had and it was very good, a step up for sure.

Terrazas de Los Andes

Cheval des Andes Mendoza Malbec Blend 2004

Dusty left bank aromatics. Strong at 15 years - a medium to full bodied palate still vibrant and alive. A word on Drinking Windows - A UK source I respect greatly said 2016-2018 for this wine but this tasting showed there was a lot of life left - maybe another 4 to 5 years I would say. To be fair it is an inexact science. This the Argentinian venture of Right Bank Icon, Chateau Cheval Blanc. 55% Malbec, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot. There is no doubt you could mistake this as Bordeaux. An excellent Wine singing at 15 years. — 5 years ago

Moussamoussettes Brut Nature Rosé Blend 2016

Punchy, funky, and softly bubbly. Strong notes of tropical fruits. Exactly what you want to be drinking while standing at the bar of a handsome bistro at golden hour, when the pink sun is shining through the windows. You can pretend for a second that there’s sand in between your toes but really it’s still winter in New York, and that’s okay because this wine is in you glass. — 6 years ago

Lujon Wine Cellars

Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

The nose of a cooling blackberry pie on a windows ledge.

This has heft, and you can tell the love that went into this. All the dark berries, yet in the brighter side - elegant, I wish I had bought a case. So, so good. Tangy lip smacking acidity with tannin overtures.

Just on the other side of peak. Love it.

So this wine is critically in its last year. Not the case at all. Still had five years of good life in it.

I think people are so used to drinking wine young, critics purposely conservatively set their drinking windows to the younger side.

This 06 is just and I mean just the other side of its bell curve. I enjoy them at that stage and in fact, live on those descriptive edges quite often. .

The nose reveals; ruby, ripe & slightly baked fruits of; sweet, black plum, blackberries, black cherries, stewed strawberries, black raspberries, plums, raspberries, cranberries, pomegranate, raspberry cola, dry, crushed rocks, dry twig, dark spice, anise to black licorice, soft sweet tarriness, sage, graphite, dry tobacco, limestone minerals, soft leather, blonde volcanics, dark, slightly moist soils with candied, fresh & slightly withering; dark, red, purple, blue florals framed in lavender.

The palate is; round, juicy, voluptuous & sexy. Tannins are rounded yet firm & tarry. The tension, structure, balance and length are peaking. Ruby, ripe & slightly baked fruits of; sweet, black plum, blackberries, black cherries, stewed strawberries, black raspberries, plums, raspberries, cranberries, pomegranate, raspberry cola, dry, crushed rocks, dry twig, dark spice, anise to black licorice, dark chocolate, caramel, mocha, soft sweet tarriness, sage, Provence herbs, graphite, dry tobacco, limestone minerals, soft leather, blonde volcanics, dark, slightly soils with candied, fresh & slightly withering; dark, red, purple, blue florals framed in lavender. The acidity is round & like a gentle rain shower. The finish is rich, lush, ruby, nicely polished, elegant & finishing with persistent dark spices for minutes.

Photos of our visit to Vineyard 29. Our tasting area, two shots of the walk to their tasting room and display room of their love for a guitar artist I can’t remember.

I’m thinking about starting a Grateful Journal. I’ve heard that writing down things you’re thankful for 5-10 mins before sleep helps you actually get the most from your sleep and also helps you wake up more energized. Tonight, my journal will note how thankful I am for friends who share great wine. @Frank this young beauty is sultry. Like making love on a hot summer’s night with the windows open. Opens with a pleasant earthy musk, meaty and gamey notes, and some fresh herbs, garrigue. Luscious and thicky-thick on the palate (see: Nelly). The red and blue fruits sing in wonderful harmony with the earthy, unadulterated tension just below the surface. Spicy, mineral, savory, and clean fruit all at once. Many years ahead. Perfect way to get in the Christmas spirit! — 5 years ago

Elysian Brewing

Space Dust IPA

Loose, frothy, hoary, blonde dome built on big bubbles. Navel orange, lemon dough, tangerine, and ruby grapefruit with a sweet side to the bouquet. Texturally perfect with a zesty pizzazz. Yellow grapefruit and lemon prevail here on the citrus flip side. All aboard, because every car of this train strains under the weight of these fruits, and goes on as far as the palate can see! There is a softer, lime interplay, and an interesting wheat germ moment that races by the windows of this Shinkansen. The lacing has devolved to pterodactyl heirlglyphs with dance moves painted by Dubuffet. Finally, after acclimation to the break-neck speeds of the time travel train, we arrive in the land of the lemon poppy eaters! Doest the Dust? Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Fantastic. Was concerned that it might be overly tannic given the drinking windows I saw on-line, but this was approachable right out of the gate. Incredible nose of blueberries, blackberries, currants and bittersweet chocolate, this is a rich, hedonistic wine with an amazing full mouthfeel, sweet, integrated tannins, and a lingering, balanced finish. Reminds me a bit of the 2002. Has a long life ahead of it (no hint of secondary flavors...yet), but is worth a try right now. — 4 years ago

Château Féret-Lambert

Red Bordeaux Blend 2015

Expected purple-black without variance. Ripe plums and rich prunes dance the dance of dawn and dusk. Dried blackberry and red currant trace their steps. Clean waters flow and blueberry and elderberry emerge. Even bacon fat. This is plump Bordeaux. Graphite washes thinly, revealing black currant and lingonberry fleetingly before settling on dried lavender and dried mallow blossom and briny violet. True to the rue. Tart cherries peek through windows in the rain-slicked, cobbled alley. Cranberry skin. #Bordeaux #chateauFéretLambert #Grézillac #BordeauxRouge #FrenchWine #wine #redwine #bordeauxsupérieur #merlotblend — 4 years ago

Mid Gold and crystal clear. Trademark aromas of Lychee with a touch of nutmeg. Lychee and honey on the full bodied palate. From a 375bottle. Semi transparant and very clear, pure red purple. Fantastic nose, leather, cinnamon, vannila, smoked wood, tar, 5 spices. Words cannot express it but I’ll give it a try: lush, Christmas, fire on a beach, steamy windows, the best steak you ever had.....

Ageno Malvasia di Candia Blend 2012

Marissa A. Ross
8.9

On the nose, this Malvasia di Candia blend from Emilia-Romagna smells like driving into Palm Springs from Highway 111 with the windows down—an intoxicating breeze of squishy peaches, lemon, hot asphalt, and freshly watered lawns.
Sipping on “Ageno” tastes similarly warm, with notes of apricot, navel oranges, leather, and sweat you accidentally licked off your own face. It’s bold but with balanced acidity and finishes with sandy tannins that feel just swept off a dune.

Jacques Puffeney

Cuvée du Jubilé Arbois Poulsard Trousseau 2014

How do I even begin to comment on the privilege of lapping up the last drops of a life's work? Puffeney's 52nd vintage, his final potion. The wine that made me aware of the Jura, that first sparked sensation of time and place, a wine that exists equally in bottle as it does in brain. When you find yourself paused mid-step on the walk home, paralyzed by the distant sound of a youthful pianist stretching their hands across blessed white and black keys. Recognizing the tension that folds over their shoulders in tandem with the all encompassing lightness of body that accompanies practice. There is something so real about the way they are playing, without too much fluidity, they stop and start again and somehow that's better than an unstopping song. There is no performance here. What is it about the walls, windows and air between you that deliver these wafts of sound in such a pleasurable way? How does the space aid the aesthetic? You keep standing there, basking in this auditory coat, and for a sliver of time you want nothing. You want no one. You have everything. This pianist will never meet you, nor you them, yet there is partnership, a unity, an offer and reception. An electrical circuit you have both worked to complete. You want to cling tightly to this moment and you find yourself searching for evidence to make you present. The sky was blue, the pavement was wet, I was just about there, I was happy. But all of this is already phrased in the past tense, the moment has already slid away from you. You pick up your forgotten step and continue forward, dizzy from experience, left with only a stamp in your mind that you can picture but never fully revisit. Little death. — 6 years ago
