On the nose, this is immediately thin-skinned lime. Some dustiness on the nose too if that makes sense... On the palate, this is mineral, that crisp lime flavor, sage... The texture is the absolute star of the show here... Such a nice medium plus body... Several steps from a patio wine. So elegant but also refreshing... Acidic but no sharp flavors here. A creek winding through smooth stones... The finish is long and somehow satisfying for such a refreshing wine... Paired with several morel mushroom courses... — a day ago
A great Chardonnay! It could make a Chardonnay drinker out of me. Wonderful floral aromas. Flavors of peach, honeysuckle and apple blossom. — 2 months ago
This wine has a rich and beautiful cherry red color. Its nose is playful enough, all watermelon candy and apples and strawberries, but with an herbal tilt that seems very elusive. I think the aroma reminds me of some wines made from North American grapes, but that is not the case here. This wine comes from Portugal’s production area known as Vinho Verde. Yes, that translates to “green wine” but it actually means “young wine.” The palate brings a strong showing of cherry, strawberry and a sort of Jolly Rancher note. The acidity is wonderful, delightfully tingly and quite refreshing. An earthy tone of red fruit persists after the sip. — a month ago
The 1976 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate from Clos du Val is the most interesting of all the wines. The estate was founded by John and Henrietta Goelet in the early Seventies when the couple challenged recently graduated winemaker Bernard Portet to create a Bordeaux-inspired estate in Napa. Clos du Val attained global recognition when its inaugural 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon was one of the wines poured blind by Steven Spurrier at the epochal The Judgement of Paris, so this bottle of 1976 was one of their earliest bottlings that, incidentally, came directly from Clos de Val’s apparently meager reserves. It is very elegant and perfumed on the nose, typical old school, classic Napa Cabernet in all its unfettered glory, beautifully defined with wilted rose petals and a light fish scale element. Supple, very pliant tannins define the palate. There remains ample freshness and poise, a fine silver thread of acidity and a clove-tinged, rounded, exquisitely balanced finish that would surpass practically every other Bordeaux from this vintage. Outstanding. (Neal Martin, Vinous, April 2024)
